By the time we got back to La Push, it was 11:30. I dropped Leah and Nova off and drove to my house. Old Quil and mom weren't home. My goodness, they go out a lot... I hauled my stuff upstairs and called for Quil. When he didn't answer, I cracked open the door to his room.

He was on his stomach on the bed, fast asleep and snoring incredibly loud. I put my bags in my bedroom and changed into my pajama pants and a T-shirt and went downstairs hunting for food. I found a note on the fridge.

Anna&Quil,
Gone to stay with friends in Seattle for a few days. Be good. Love you. Xoxo

I smiled and opened the fridge, grabbing the bowl of tuna. A knock came at the front door and jumped. Turning around, I saw Embry, a huge goofy smile on his face. I unlocked the door and tried to look mad.

      "Hey, Call."

"Anna, sorry I didn't text you. Or call you. We had a lot of...stuff to do." His eyes followed me as I went back to the kitchen and made three sandwiches.

"Yeah. It's whatever. Leah, Nova, and I went shopping in Port Angeles anyway. Since I didn't have anything important to do here." I narrowed my eyes at him and carried the food to the couch where I plopped down and turned the TV to some scary movie channel playing Halloween movies all night. Embry sat next to me.

"I said I'm sorry, babe." He looked at me with puppy dog eyes and my heart softened.

"Oka-a-ay." I smiled and ruffled his hair, offering him a bite of my sandwich. We sat there for a while, talking about random stuff. Embry's mom was apparently really strict and she worked a lot.

"My dad was like that. We lived way down south. Like way, way down. It Sounds like a cliche in every scary movie set in the swamp you've ever seen, but we lived in a huge plantation jihads off a dirt road with a mile long driveway. Maple trees line it. It's beautiful. I grew up there. Dad left it to me, but until I can afford it or sell it, the state has possession of it. There's a pond behind it, in the woods. Anyway, I wanted that lifestyle; the barefoot, outside twenty-four-seven, tailgates and bonfires thing. I wanted a simple life... But he was a big shot lawyer and he couldn't accept that about me.

"He bought my clothes--the most expensive of course--and we ate at the nicest restaurants. My truck is the only thing I picked." I brushed some hair behind my ear and looked down.

      "How did he...?"

"Die?" I looked up and he nodded.

"He drank a lot, when he wasn't working. He was coming home from the country club and he was a mile from our house. My friends and I had been drinking and most of them had left. When my dad texted and told me he was almost home, I made my boyfriend leave. We weren't anything serious... I didn't love him or anything. It was just something to piss my dad off. They got in a head-on collision with each other. My dad was going almost seventy-five down that little road. And Allen had been drinking. We all had.

"When my dad didn't get home, I went out looking for him. And I found them both. Allen died on impact. But my dad was still alive when I got there. I could've gotten him out of the car... My dad used to hit me. He would get drunk at home. He would never let his friends see him trashed. And he would find something to bitch about. I hated him and everything he was. And I let him die." I stared down at my knees curled up to much stomach.

"Anna, that's not wrong. You know how many other people would've done the same in your situation? Not just teenagers, but adults, too." He wrapped his arms around me and in that moment, I was so happy.

Not giddy, just happy. He made me happy. I looked at my phone and it was 5 A.M. We went upstairs and cuddled on my bed until I fell asleep.

//////////

Monday, I was nervous for school. I'm honestly surprised those girls didn't go to the cops. But I knew I would catch hell at school. Embry didn't sleep over Sunday night. Apparently my parents had one rule--even while staying hours away--and so did Embry's mom...

I got up and dressed in yoga shorts--God, I hope this school didn't start on the dress code--and a red hoodie.
I pulled my hair in a bun with my bangs braided and clipped to the side. I pulled on my boots and jogged downstairs with my bag and phone. Quil was sitting at the counter, his head propped on his wrist, and he was slightly drooling.

"Quil! We gotta go." He jumped slightly and nodded sluggishly. We climbed into my truck and headed to school.

As we pulled into the parking lot, we got out and walked toward the boys' usual spot at the table near the woods. Embry and Seth were there. No sign of Jake or anyone else. I sat across from Embry and Quil sat next to me.

"Hey, Anna." Seth smiled, high fiving me.

"Hey, kid. Hey, Embry." I smiled.

"More like Emma. He won't shut up about you. He's like a fan girl at a One Direction concert." Seth rolled his eyes and Embry slugged him in the shoulder. The bell rang and we all headed to class.
