sam let out a huge snore, jolting me awake, which in turn jolted him awake, shaking the entire bed.

"what?" he looked around cluelessly.

"you just let out the biggest, loudest, most obnoxious snore i have ever heard in my entire life."

"whoops." he stretched, helping me realize that in the middle of the night, he had lost his shirt. "breakfast?"

"absolutely. anyone home? do i have to perform acrobatics out of your window?"

"you're good. the twins should be out of the house by now." he said.

the twins were not out of the house by then. instead, they both sat at the kitchen island. with marie and jane. needless to say, they could tell our relationship status, as i went downstairs in nothing but the hoodie and my underwear and bra, and he only went down in his sweatpants.

"oh-" jake looked at us and then right back down at his plate. josh let out a snort and nearly launched his face into his eggs. marie waved at sam, and he timidly waved back, walking quickly to the laundry room, presumably to get a shirt.

not having a clue what to do next, i just stood awkwardly in the doorway. "did he make you part of his complete breakfast?" jake asked me, making josh laugh so hard he fell out of his chair, which then made jane snort in laughter. marie just covered her mouth and leaned on jake, stifling a giggle. he smiled, proud of himself.

"jake, what the fuck do i even say to that?" i asked, shrugging my shoulders. it was a pretty good joke.

"jacob thomas kiszka, i swear to god, i am going to kick your fucking ass!" sam barreled into the room, grinning but with a determined look on his face. jake stood up and shuffled backward. the two tackled each other into the living room, nearly taking me with them. i looked at marie, who sat with jane at the island. josh was still on the floor, shaking with laughter.

jane offered jake's old seat to me. "there's extra eggs in the pan on the stove. i had a feeling it wasn't just sam, i never saw you come back downstairs last night."

i smiled wearily, taking a plate from the cabinet. "i spent the night, but not like that-"

"we know. jake's just poking fun, that's all." marie said. josh finally returned to his seat.

"did you-" i started, but all three of their faces turned red before i could even say anything. "right. got it. i won't ask." i sat down, stuffing my face. sushi wasn't a very filling dinner, and i only had one roll last night. i was so nervous i could barely eat.

assorted shouts and thuds came from the living room, with scattered laughter and cursing from the two boys. i rolled my eyes.

"so you and sam are the same age, right?" jane asked. i nodded.

"you and i might be in classes next year, then." marie poked at her eggs, smiling.

"you're gonna be a senior, too?" i asked.

"yeah. danny's my cousin, that's how i know them." she pointed to the living room.

"and i was in a film class with josh our senior year." jane added.

"i see." i scraped the remains of my plate up, ate them, and brought them to the sink, taking the other plates with me.

"what are your plans today?" jane asked me.

"sam works today, so nothing. i was probably gonna go down to the park and read."

"we were gonna go to this new consignment shop a half-hour away, did you wanna come?" marie asked.

"yeah, that would be nice. i just have to get clothes from my house. all i have is this and the dress i wore to dinner last night."

sam and jake returned, out of breath. "when your dad's grocery shopping, i'll go get them for you." sam said.

"aw, thanks." i looked out the window to see my father getting into his car. "speak of the devil."

"you're psychic, love."

"thanks, sammy." i rolled my eyes. i felt marie and jane kick each other under the table. he opened the front door and crossed the street, using the spare key we kept under the mat. he soon opened the front door with a plastic bag, tied neatly. i smiled.

"he's a good one." i heard jane whisper.

i waved at marie and jane from the door of the bowling alley, clothes bag in hand. it was towards the end of sam's shift, so i figured i would hang out in the area until he got off and we could go back to my house together.

i opened the doors and was greeted by terrible pop music, as per usual. it was a sunday, so all the party rooms were full. i skipped up to the counter but stopped when i saw another girl standing at the counter, talking to sam. immediately, alarm bells went off in my brain, but i didn't want to be that girlfriend, so i hung back until she left, watching the little kids push their bowling balls down the lane using the dinosaur tail ramps. after another few minutes, i heard the girl say goodbye and walk away, hips swaying. she had long, strawberry blonde hair, mom jeans on, and a tube top.

"hey, love," sam said as i leaned on the counter.

"pickin' up chicks? who was that?" i asked.

"oh, that was kenna. her and i used to date."

"oh. and there's nothing bad between that?"

"no, her and i are still friends. she actually asked me if i wanted to get dinner tonight." a family walked up next to us, putting their shoes on the counter, looking at us oddly.

"and you said..." i waved my hand around.

"yeah. i didn't want her to get mad or anything, she's always been cool."

i let that sit for a minute. dinner with his ex? and she seemed so attractive too, she was most certainly trying to get with him. "right. okay. well. i'm gonna go-" i picked up my purse off the counter.

"stay, y/n, i get off in 20 minutes."

"no, sam. have fun at dinner." i walked away quickly, the door slamming behind me. fuck the kids who were having their 6th birthday or whatever. i was pissed.
