days after the show, i still had a horrific migraine, but i was better. this was a lesson not to never drink again, but to never drink an obscene amount at a show again. it was a lesson i'd probably forget by the time i reached my 20s.

august loomed around the corner, meaning that school was also just around the corner, at the beginning of september. sam and i most certainly had the same classes, as we were both honors and ap kids, and our high school had 600 kids max. we sat on the couch watching mtv with jake when there was a polite knock at the door. certainly not josh or jane. "marie?" i asked. jake looked at his phone with a perplexed look and shook his head. sam got up hesitantly, peeking out the top of the door. he looked back at us.

"danny's with a girl."

i gasped, turning around on the couch to see the door. jake sat forward, waving his hand for sam to open the door. he greeted them and they stepped inside.

"mackenzi?" jake stood up, shocked. the girl smiled, and he walked over, hugging her. i winked at danny and gave him a thumbs-up, making him grin.

she had wavy brown hair that was probably about the same length as sam's, red-painted lips, and green eyes that lit up the room. she wore a tattered t-shirt with the who's logo on it and a pair of jean shorts, and heels that still made her shorter than danny. she waved to sam and i, and we waved back. i took out my phone and opened the notes app. she's way out of his league. i nudged him, making him look down. he then took out his phone. that's what everyone said about you and i, too. i grinned.

there was another knock at the door as jake and danny headed to the garage. josh stood at the front door, holding hands with jane. is this bring your girlfriend to work day or something?

"hey guys, come in. they just went into the garage. danny's got a girl with him, too." i said, swinging the door open. josh's face lit up, and he practically left jane in the dust. "is marie coming too?" i asked.

"at some point, yes. why?"

"i was thinking all the girls could go out so they can actually, y'know, work?" jane laughed and nodded.

"can i go meet mackenzi and ask if she wants dinner?"

"go ahead. i'll get my car and wait for her."

jane turned around and made her way to the garage, and i opened the door and crossed the street, hitting the unlock button on my keys. my jetta's lights flashed and i heard a click as i approached the door. it was an ancient car from 2002, but it still ran and i loved it dearly.

i pulled into the driveway of the kiszkas and sat in the car, taking out my phone. i texted sam, telling him we were getting dinner, and texted the group chat marie, jane, and i had, telling them both to hurry up. marie texted back that she hadn't left her house yet, so i told her i would pick her up on the way to wherever we were going.

jane and mackenzi finally came outside and got into the car, jane in the passenger seat and mackenzi in the back. "you know, i don't think i've been in your car yet. i love it." jane looked around and in the glove compartment, where a huge collection of cassettes sat. it was a large collection at the beginning of the summer, but whenever sam and i went thrifting or he went shopping and saw a cassette, he would buy it for me, nearly doubling the collection in almost three and a half months. jane picked out a fleetwood mac one i had, showed it to mackenzi, and when she nodded, jane popped it in the player.

two songs in, we pulled up to marie's house, where i honked twice and she came out almost immediately. she opened the back door, introduced herself to mackenzi, and buckled. "where we goin'?"

"that's a great question. someone shout random turns and we'll see where we wind up by the end of the album." i said. they all laughed and agreed, and i took the car out of park. it got really chaotic when they all decided to shout directions at the same time as each other, but we eventually wound up at a sketchy-looking diner the next town over.

in case i die at this diner, i love you, i typed in a text to sam with a picture. he just sent back the emoji with gritted teeth.

it was really tiny and empty for a thursday night, 20 or so booths and 20 tables in total. no wonder, it was literally in the middle of the woods.

"sit wherever you'd like," a lady with bright red hair that stuck up in odd places said from behind the counter. i looked at marie, prompting her to lead the way with my hand. mackenzi had known us for an hour, and she looked terrified of where she'd wound up.

once we sat down, marie started the conversation. "so, where did you meet danny?" she looked at mackenzi.

"i met him at one of their shows in april. i'm the twins age, so i'm in college and i was home for spring break. i went to meet up with josh and jake and catch up, and i wound up meeting danny. we've been dating since last month."

"wow, ya'll are taking it really slow. i'd known the boys for a day and i was already at band practice." i said.

"y/n, you live two houses down and you weren't dating sam yet." jane rolled her eyes.

"yes, i know that."

we all ordered shareable food and sat at the table for about an hour and a half, laughing and talking about everything and nothing all at once.

the conversation had soon spiraled to marie and i talking about prom. "are you going?" she asked me.

"i mean, probably? unless sam dies or moves away. then no. but yes."

"jake and i have already decided we are wearing purple for pictures, and i'm gonna go alone since he can't go." she said proudly. i groaned and thudded my head on the table. "what?"

"that's so cheezy. matching to prom?"

"yes! everyone does it." she smacked her hands on the table to emphasize.

"everyone does it because they have no idea what else to do to seem original."

"you're taking away all her fun." mackenzi put her hand on my shoulder.

"she's got lots of fun with jake before and after, i just don't want that to be the highlight of her prom. wearing the same color as her boyfriend."

"that won't be the highlight of prom! i'll have other things?"
"like what?" i cocked my head. silence.

we all knew what.
