Another knock came on the door, more impatient this time. Ava's dad sood up and brushed himself down before slowly wandering over. He took the door of the latch and gave Ava a sad smile before opening it.
Outside stood a tall, serious looking woman dressed in a grey, tweed suit with a tight skirt, white top and close fitting jacket. She held a clipboard and looked at it over the top of her black-rimmed glasses. Her shiny black hair was pulled back into a tight bun on the top of her head. Ava's dad stepped aside to let her in and she picks her way across the grin covered floor to the chair Ava's dad offered her.
"Mr Wright?" She asked, and Ava's dad nodded.
"That's me."
The woman nodded at him and turned to Ava.
"So you just be Ava, right?" She said. Ava gave we a bored look.
"No, I'm Mr Wright and this here is my dad, Ava." She said, each word dripping with sarcasm. The look the woman gave her next was like a bucket of cold, ice water being poured down Ava's back. If looks could kill she would be dead 3 times over.
"My name in Antoinette." The woman - Antoinette - said, ploughing on.
"I am here to become the social worker of Ava Wright, who will be requiring a new legal guardian.""No I don't." Ava countered.
"Yes you do." Her dad said sadly, looking down in shame at his hands.
Antoinette smiled a cold, sarcastic smile.
"Mr Wright, the police will be here any minute now. They have asked for you to remain in this flat while I take Ava away first. Ava, please go and fetch a small bag of belongings from your room and say your final goodbyes to your father." Antoinette said in a business-like fashion, standing up and curtly brushing down her skirt.
Ava wandered bed to her blanket in the corner and picked up a pair of pants and a mucky t-shirt from the pile if rubbish beside it. She tied a knot in the t-shirt to make a bag and put the pants inside, then went back over and looked up at Antoinette. Her expression was black, emotionless. She heard Antoinette mutter something like 'worse than I thought' under her breath while she scribbled something down. Ava walked ver to her dad and wrapped him in a tight embrace.
"We will see each other again. We will." She mumbled into his shirt, then Antoinette led her away.
