"You okay?" Hudson asked for the third time on our twenty minute drive back to town.
"Yeah." My eyes remained glued to my reflection in the side mirror - my thumb in my mouth, biting on my fingernail.
I was a smart girl, really I was. I was athletically intelligent, I had a 4.0 in the classroom, and a solid head on my shoulders. But, these past few weeks I'd been insanely stupid, and I blamed my hormones and Hudson's pale blue eyes for it all. I'd somehow managed to cross the very fine line between friendship and lovers, and now I just wished I could go the fuck back.
"You wanna get takeout and watch a movie tonight in our shed?" Hudson's gravely voice touched me below my waistband, and I shifted in my seat.
"Okay, sure." More nail gnawing.
"I'll go get Johnny's and meet you at seven?"
"Sounds good." I shook my head, the sound of seven o'clock ratting something loose inside of my brain.
"Wait! Shit. I...I can't...I have...something already."
"Yeah? What kind of something?"
"You know...just a thing."
"Why are you acting so weird?"
"I'm not." I tugged at the hem of my hoodie.
"So why won't you tell me what you're doing then."
"Because it's not a big deal."
"Then just tell me." Hudson hit the blinker to turn onto my street.
"Fine. It's just a...dinner."
"A dinner? With your grandparents?"
"No."
"Okay, so with who then?"
"Like I said, it's not a big deal."
"Okay, then just tell me." Hudson's voice was quickly morphing from amused to agitated.
"Fine. With...with Bryce."
"Bryce Hall?!"
"Yeah."
"You're going out with Bryce Fucking Hall?!" Hudson had rounded the corner to full blown agitation.
"I don't know, Hudson." I scrubbed at my makeup free face. "I guess."
"Why the fuck would you go out on a date with that douche bag?"
"Why do you even care?" I glared at him, purposefully ignoring his name calling.
"I don't."
"Yeah, you're certainly acting like it." I huffed under my breath as Hudson turned onto my street.
"What did you say?"
"Just forget it." I looked back out the window as Hudson pulled into the gravel space behind my bedroom. "Do you want to come in?"
"I probably shouldn't. I still need to pack."
"Okay." I sucked in a breath. "Well if you change your mind, I'll leave my slider open."
"'Kay."
We sat for a few more minutes before Hudson climbed out of the driver's side and hiked across our side yards that were adjoined.
