I look at him in surprise and loss, far too baffled to see him up close to actually gather my thoughts and at least say something coherent. droplets of rain flow down his skin and wet his shirt, subtle beads of water caught in his lashes as he stares at me with an expression I couldn't figure out.
as he holds out his umbrella above me, his eyes bore into mine with undecipherable emotions. he was either displeased or numb. he wasn't smiling nor was he making a frown—his eyes weren't lit in joy nor were they bearing hatred. Takashi was like an empty shell.
"Takashi, you're getting wet from the rain..."
my mind may be a mess but my old habits of getting easily concerned for him spoke for me.
"what are you doing here, Izumi?" he solemnly asks.
I missed his voice and all the feelings that came with it.
I force myself free from my thoughts as I try to come up with an answer for him. there were two things his question could've meant: one, what I was doing on the pavement crying under the rain while my knees bled beneath me, and two, what I was doing home.
for my own convenience, I decide to answer the former.
"you left," I mutter.
his lips curve up slightly into a sarcastic smile as if I had said something laughable.
"that should be my line."
"I came after you but you disappeared quickly."
"really? you weren't desperately running back to wherever it is you're hiding since I saw you?"
"no. I wanted to catch up to you."
from a sarcastic smile to a genuine one, Takashi's eyes finally held more familiarity and fondness as he looked at me.
"I was buying an umbrella, assuming you didn't have one that is."
my eyes widen in surprise. "you bought this umbrella for me?"
"I just wanted to get away from you for a moment until I clear my head a bit, and I can't come back without an umbrella when it's raining," he softly sighs as he crouches down.
his closeness causes me to draw a breath as he inspects the gushing wounds on my knees while still holding the umbrella over me. the way we spoke to each other right now wasn't for past lovers who've gained scars.
even when being this close to each other alone was enough to make us bleed all over again, I guess our concern for each other would always come first. my concern right now would be the rain and the potential fever he'll get from it. his concern was quite obvious—I was crying and bleeding, I'm always a wreck in front of him, it's nothing new.
"Takashi, you're getting wet."
"can you walk?"
I frown a bit as he remains showered by the rain.
"yes."
"I don't think so," he mutters.
"can you please cover yourself with the umbrella first?" I scowl.
"then I'll do as you say."
I get soaked again from the rain once he draws his umbrella over himself and away from me. he looks smugly at me which made me feel embarrassed all of a sudden. my eyes leave his as I push down with my hands to lift myself up, the wounds on my foot and knees causing me to lose my balance and stumble forward.
my nerves tingle all throughout my body as if it knew beforehand—my eyes closing not in anticipation for impact but for the relief of being back to where I rightfully should be. I've planted myself against him, my hands clumsy and loose around his waist as he firmly holds me to himself.
