TW: Brief mention of blood
Wednesday, August 18th, 2:30 p.m.
"Hey, sugar!" A thick, cheery Southern accent greeted me with a dazzling smile as I tugged my hair into a bun so tight it was bound to give me a headache. The familiar voice cut through the bustling noise of the band room as students scurried about, preparing for our performance while pretending not to whisper to each other about our arriving visitors.
"Hey, Magnolia," I greeted the daughter of Charlotte LaBuff, looking up from my socked feet. "Need something?"
"Oh no!" She assured me, her voice as bubbly as a shaken soda bottle. She held out a large, tan garment bag to me - one large enough to fit a whole human inside. "I just grabbed your uniform bag by accident."
I offered her a smile and took the bag from her grip. With a soft thud, I dropped it beside me on the floor. "Thanks, Maggie."
"Maggie!" A familiar voice called across the room, drawing our attention. Drew jogged toward us, his strides confident, already dressed in his bibbers, which were a putrid yellow color. His bright eyes sparkled with mischief, contrasting sharply with the dull hue of his uniform. With a casual toss, he flung the rest of his uniform bag onto the floor.
"Drew!" Magnolia greeted him in the same cheery manner she greeted me moments ago. "What's up?"
"I just wanted to see how you did on your Calculus assignment," Drew answered with a smile.
"I did just fine, thanks to you!" Maggie replied. "I've got to get ready. Don't you two kids get into too much trouble while I'm gone!"
Drew's laughter rumbled deeply. We'll try, Maggie." With a final wave, Maggie disappeared into the sea of students, leaving Drew and me to our own devices.
I knelt on the floor, the rough green carpet scratching against my knees as I unzipped my uniform bag. Anticipation hung heavy in the air, mingling with the faint scent of polished instruments and nervous energy.
With a sense of resignation, I extracted the bright yellow bibber from the depths of my bag. Despite the countless times I had worn it before, the garish color never failed to elicit a grimace from me.
"You know," I began, as I wrestled with the bibber, trying to pull it up past my thighs, "People are going to think the two of you are dating."
"Me and Maggie?" Drew asked with a sound somewhere between a laugh and a scoff. With practiced ease, he slipped into his uniform jacket, the blue fabric hugging his frame snugly. "Yeah, when pigs fly."
I let out a breath of effort as I finally pulled my legs inside the bibbers. "If you're looking for pigs, I saw one on the tourney field. She has brown hair and wears pink dresses."
Drew's eyes grew wide. "Did . . . did you just call Audrey a pig?"
"Yes." I secured the straps of my bibber in place and snapped the buttons across my abdomen closed, the fabric now clinging uncomfortably to my skin. "I'm just stating the facts."
I slipped on the jacket and reached behind me, trying to slot its tiny metal zipper into the stopper at the nape of my neck. My fingers fumbled blindly for the little metal tab, and I managed to grab it but kept missing when slotting it in.
