No matter how bright the sun had been or how blue the ocean surrounding our Isle, it had always seemed dark. Maybe it had been the absence of grass and trees or the lack of vibrant colors. The dark waves crashing against our shores during storms, muffled by the magic barrier, could have been the reason for the somber atmosphere. The crumbling brick buildings, leaning on each other for support that had cast long shadows across the ground, had only served to shroud the place. The narrow alleyways formed by these structures had been playgrounds for children looking to steal. Graffiti and defaced posters from Auradon had adorned the walls of every building, and the sounds of motorbikes, catfights, and ceaseless shouting had filled the air constantly.
Jay and I rounded into a narrow alleyway, the sun disappearing behind the towering walls. Slumped on the ground with a cap over his face there was an older man snoring loudly. Jay had pulled the cap from the man's face and thrown it at me, and I had caught it, shoving it into my bag. Since we had been friends, Jay had used me as his luggage boy. I had long given up on complaining about it.
The sounds of hollering had us jumping. We had pressed against the wall beside the snoring man just as two motorbikes had ripped through the alley. The riders had revved their bikes, shouting and laughing at us. They had worn no helmets, and their brown hair had billowed behind them - Gill and Odette, the two eldest children of Gaston.
"Watch where you're going!" Jay had shouted to the two siblings as they had turned their bikes down a dangerously sharp corner and disappeared into another alley. Jay had shaken his head and reached behind me, swiping an old metal cup from a wooden crate. Jay had unbuttoned my bag and slipped the cup in as we had emerged from the dark alley. Jay had paused, staring into the bag. I had been quick to button it.
"Gill and Ode were going to kill someone someday," I had said, dodging a group of children who had been chasing after one another with pieces of metal, likely pulled from an old building somewhere. The smallest kid in the group had held up his piece of metal - an impressively large pipe, considering his size - and had let out some kind of battle cry. The other kids had shouted in response, and they had resumed their chasing.
Leaving the children to their chasing, we had turned the corner, stepping into the center of the Isle. The sounds of shouting vendors and workers eating and taking bets had filled my ears, and the smell of trash mixing with the stench of decaying fruits and cheap perfumes had made my head spin.
"Yeah," Jay had agreed, narrowly dodging a woman who had tried to spray the homemade cologne she had been selling on him. "And when it had happened, it wouldn't have been an accident."
I had barked with laughter, pausing to look at a booth full of bruising vegetables. At the sound of my laughter, a couple beside me stared at me. I had looked away in embarrassment, my ears turning a shade of pink. Jay had grinned and had sat down the wilting cabbage he had picked up and had shoved my shoulder. I had stumbled back, almost falling into the couple. I had pushed Jay in retaliation, but his muscular frame hadn't moved an inch.
Jay had laughed again, and we had continued our trek. We had stopped at a large building - one of the only restaurants on the Isle. Jay had reached out, his large hands grasping a metal bar attached to the outer wall. He had kicked off the ground and had pulled himself up using the bar. He had swung onto the building's second-level balcony, landing lithely, like a cat.
