Friday, August 27th, 12:00 p.m., The Day of Ben's Coronation
Crystal shot up, sweat covering her brow. Her hands grasped at the clothing on her body, gasping as soft silk ran through her fingers. She could feel soft bed linens under her and a pile of fuzzy blankets that covered her lap and legs.
She took a deep breath through her nose, slowing her breathing. The memories of last night hit her, and she groaned as she realized what had transpired.
She rubbed her hands over her tired eyes. She looked over to see the curtains were pulled tightly over the grand windows, stopping any sunlight from entering the room. The bathroom door was cracked slightly, and she could hear the sounds of running water coming from the bathtub.
She sighed and pulled the blankets from her body. She swung her legs to the side of the bed, letting them dangle there for a moment before finding the strength to leave the bed. She wrapped her arms around herself as she walked slowly to the bathroom. Every step felt heavier than the last. Her eyes felt puffy and red, and every bone in her body screamed at her to return to her warm, inviting bed.
Crystal peaked her head into the bathroom and let out a sigh of relief as she saw Violet kneeling by the tub, her hand turning the tub's tap off. The bathroom was full of steam and smelled faintly floral as Violet poured a small amount of oil into the clear water.
"What time is it?" Crystal asked her lady-in-waiting. Violet stood and turned to her. She smiled and bowed her head politely. "Good morning, Your Highness. I'm glad to see you awake. It's almost noon."
Crystal didn't have the energy to be surprised.
"Your mother told us to let you sleep. His Majesty carried you to bed last night. No one expected you to go to school after what happened," Violet continued.
Now, Crystal was surprised. Her mother had been the one to let her miss school? Her mother had allowed her to rest and sleep till noon? Was her mother trying to repair their relationship? Maybe she hadn't disappointed her mother as much as she had thought. The very thought brought a smile to Crystal's face.
"Your Highness, do you know what today is?" Violet asked suddenly, pulling Crystal from her thoughts. She shook her head. Trying to recall anything just made her headache.
"It's the day of His Highness' coronation," Violet said. Crystal's eyes went wide with surprise as she suddenly felt awake.
"It's coronation day!?" She shouted, more than awake now. She took off back to her room, and sure enough, like a looming figure of dread, stood the blue and gold dress she had been fitted for only weeks ago. It stood tall and proud in the corner of her room, but Crystal felt like it was mocking her.
"Crystal," Violet's voice came from behind her, "are you alright?" The sudden burst of energy left as soon as it had come. Crystal's shoulders sagged.
"No, I'm not okay," She admitted. She looked over her shoulder at Violet, who cooed softly. "I'm sorry. I know being a princess is hard, but no one blames you for getting sick last night." Violet stepped around Crystal and wrapped her arm around her shoulder, guiding the princess back to the bathroom.
Violet seemed to regard Crystal with the same reverence one may have for the princess' crown. She handled the princess like she was a porcelain doll. Like one wrong move would cause her to shatter into a million little pieces.
Crystal didn't have the energy to argue as Violet helped her from the silk pajamas she had been changed into. She held Crystal's hand in her own and eased her into the bathtub. Crystal let out a sigh of relief as her muscles relaxed. The water swirled and rippled around her body. Little droplets of water slid off her fingers and splashed back into the tub.
