Friday, August 20th, 3:20 p.m.

For someone who was supposed to be home every day at a specific time, Crystal wasn't home on time very often. Despite her mother's obvious disapproval over the phone, Crystal found herself still here once again, long after the bell had marked the end of the school day.

Crystal sat on a metal bench that stood on the sidelines of the field, her hands clasped around the back of her neck as she turned her head to pop her joints. She, Carlos, and Ben had been running through basic tourney drills for the past 20 minutes, and the knots in her muscles were becoming more apparent with each one.

Ben stood next to Crystal, penciling something onto a paper attached to a wooden clipboard. She was aware that he was speaking, but it sounded like mindless chatter in her ears. Instead, her attention was focused on the boy on the field.

Just like Ben, Crystal had also switched out her jeans and blazer for a much more athletic outfit, but Carlos had opted to stay in his red and white leather ensemble. Crystal chuckled as she watched him strip off his jacket, tossing it aside and revealing a black, long-sleeved shirt under it. The poor boy was sweating to death.

Carlos' ears perked at the sound of her laughter. His chocolate-brown eyes met her icy blue ones from across the field. He smiled at her in a way that made her shiver.

She watched as he bent his arm, imitating the way Ben was holding his clipboard. He moved his mouth in time with Ben's words, dramatically mocking him.

Crystal snickered, causing Ben to stop mid-sentence. He looked up from his paper and between Carlos and Crystal, a knowing smile growing on his face. He turned to Crystal and she blushed, turning her gaze to the grass beneath her feet.

Evie's statement of Carlos' crush was now running clean and clear in her mind, and Crystal scolded herself. She shouldn't be entertaining this: It would only end in disaster.

Ben was still smiling as he turned his full attention to Carlos. "Okay Carlos, we're gonna do some sprints. You ready?"

"Oh!" Carlos gasped in surprise. "Sure, why not?" Crystal kept her gaze on the ground, but Carlos didn't seem to notice as he crouched down into a run.

"Sweet!" Ben smiled, brought his whistle to his lips, and blew sharply. Carlos jumped up and shrieked, taking off straight for the forest. He was throwing his arms around wildly as he ran. "No! Wait!" Crystal's eyes shot up, widening as she watched Carlos run.

She had never seen anyone run that fast in her life.

A sharp yapping filled her ears and she looked over to see the campus mutt, Dude, snapping at Carlos' heels. The small dog may have been half his size, but he was just as fast.

"Carlos?" Ben shouted after him once he saw the dog, "Carlos!"

Carlos responded with a scream as he ran farther into the forest. Crystal let out a snicker. It was almost . . . cute. Crystal quickly chastised herself again and shook the thought from her head. Searching for something else to think about, she looked to Ben.

"We gotta' go after him," She told him.

Ben nodded and dropped his clipboard to the ground with a soft thud. He reached down to re-tie the laces of his sneakers, while Crystal brought her wrist to her mouth. She slipped a black hair tie from her wrist with her teeth and pulled her hair back into a messy ponytail. She jumped up from the bench and took off towards the forest.

Her feet crushed twigs and leaves as she ran, filling the forest with sounds. But there were no sounds of Carlos.

"Find him?" Ben's exhausted voice said. He stopped next to Crystal and hunched over, grabbing his knees and panting slightly. Crystal smirked at him and clapped her hands together. "Wow, Ben. You were outrun by a princess! Who would have thought?"
