TW: Vomiting

Thursday, August 26th, 5:20 p.m.

The warm sun had just begun to set over the horizon, but a cold, salty breeze was already blowing through the fjord. Crystal could hear the faint creaking of ships as the wind blew over their old boards. She took a deep breath through her nose, savoring the smells of her home. The smells of kransekake, rich soil, and even the stinky fish of the kingdom's market brought a smile to her face.

"Your kingdom is beautiful," Carlos said as Crystal led him across the castle bridge, their hands entwined together. Mason jars with real flames lined the bridges iron inlays, lighting the way to the castle. Each little light seemed to wish Crystal farewell as she passed it.

Crystal's eyes drifted through her quiet kingdom as they walked. The buildings and streets were illuminated by soft golden sunlight. The chirping of crickets was gentle on Crystal's ears. "It is, isn't it?"

"It's nothing like on the isle," Carlos said. He stayed close to Crystal's side, but his eyes roamed every corner of the kingdom. "There everything is rundown, falling apart, filled with mildew and mold. Lots of people can't even afford housing so they sleep in converted warehouses, or on the street."

Crystal squeezed Carlos' hand. "Come on. I know a place."

Carlos seemed eager to leave the space. He followed Crystal down the street and watched as the scene changed. The white picket fences were replaced by concrete walls and chain link fences. Gravel now crunched beneath their feet as they walked.

"Where are you taking me?" Carlos asked as Crystal turned a sharp corner. She stopped at a tall brick wall and kicked off her flats. She swung herself up and grasped onto a red brick sticking out from the wall.

"Give me a boost?" Crystal asked, looking down at her boyfriend. Carlos nodded and - being very careful where he placed his hands - grabbed the bottom of her thighs and pushed her up. She let out a breath of effort as she swung up to the next brick. She slid down the other side of the wall and called Carlos to do the same. He followed, stumbling only slightly as he reached the edge. He braced his dress shoes against the cool bricks and slid down.

"What is this place?" Carlos asked as he looked around. There didn't seem to be anything special here. The fjord surrounded the kingdom on all sides - except for one - so all they had done was gotten closer to it. The small amount of grass here was a sickly yellow, and there were no trees at all. They were instead replaced by rows and rows of electrical of power lines.

She had brought him to the kingdom's substation.

Crystal plopped down on the grass, allowing her giant ball gown to pool around her. She pointed a slender finger at the sky as Carlos sat next to her. "Look."

Carlos followed her finger to a cluster of colors that seemed to be shining brighter than any others in the sunset. The sky was brilliant here, with all the kingdom's light blocked out by the expansive wall. Blots of oranges mixed with bright pinks that turned to red when they trickled down. A wonderful shade of cool blue danced through the warm colors, somehow looking as though it belonged among them.

"I found this place when I was little," Crystal said gently, softly. "Mom and I would get into fights and I would run here to cry it all out." As if on cue a breeze blew across her exposed arms as if it was trying to talk to her. Crystal let out a shiver.
