"Protect the princess at all costs!"
Crystal cursed under her breath as the sound of thundering footsteps on the castle's hard wooden floor filled her ears. Her head whipped around the hallway, and her eyes fell on a small linen closet, shrouded in darkness. She shoved herself into the small space and left the door cracked just enough that she could time her escape. She held her breath to stay silent as two groups of guards, each coming from the opposite end of the hallway, met just outside the closet.
"Status report, Lieutenant," One of the guards demanded. She looked much older than the guards around her, with wrinkles around her eyes and silver hair pulled into a tight, braided bun. Even still, she commanded respect as the other guards fell in line. A male guard, that Crystal recognized as the guard from the palace doors, stepped up and saluted the woman.
"One passenger ship is caught out on the ice. We've sent reinforcements to rescue them as we speak," He told her curtly.
The woman nodded approvingly. Crystal watched as a boy who couldn't have been more than a few years older than she stepped forward. His hand was resting on the weapon belt at his waist. "Captain, is this the work of Her Majesty?"
The captain's cold expression softened as she stepped toward the boy. She placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We don't know, Private. We must be prepared, even if it is."
"And what if it's the doing of His Majesty?" The boy continued.
"Then I shudder to think what kind of danger he's in to freeze the entirety of Arendelle," The woman answered simply.
Crystal tried to retreat further into the closet, but her elbows rammed into the many shelves that climbed the wall. She jumped back as a wisp of magic shot from her fingertips and hit a jar on the top shelf. It teetered back and forth for a moment before falling and smashing to the floor. The sound echoed through the small closet. Crystal stumbled back, pushing the door open and stumbling into the hallway.
"Your Highness?" The young boy asked, his eyes wide. Crystal's entire body snapped towards him, and she held out her hands to protect herself as he reached out. The other guards began to close in around as she began to shake.
"Please, just stay away from me! Stay away!"
Crystal threw out her hands and a blast of magic shot out like a bullet, racing towards the commander. The commander jumped back as the magic sped past her, hitting the far wall and covering it in ice. It slithered up the wall while Crystal and the guards watched, horrified.
"Sorcery," One of the guards whispered, looking between Crystal and the ice.
Crystal pulled her shaking hands to her chest and took a small step to the side. Her chest heaved with each labored breath she took, and her eyes darted between each guard as they watched her. One slowly reached for the weapon that hung from their belt.
"No!" Crystal shouted. Her hands shot another blast of magic, and the circle of guards around her parted.
Crystal pushed past them and took off down the hall, her feet leaving a trail of ice in her wake. She didn't look back as she fled down the stairs and threw open the doors to the throne room.
Violet was kneeling at her mother's throne, a small rag in her hands. The air smelled thickly of lemon-scented wood polish. Violet whipped around as the doors crashed against the wall. She dropped her rag, abandoning her work, and ran to Crystal, seizing her shoulders tightly.
