Chapter 2

Two depressing hours passed, and nobody spoke. Everybody was just sat on the sofa like statues. It was like the house had died again. Not one word was even muttered. All ten minds in that house were thinking the same thing: am I going to get out of here alive? Since there were only two places out of the ten, it meant that everybody each had a one in five chance of survival, and they did not like those odds. Nobody made any eye contact with anybody else.

Then, they started to think of ways on how they were going to die. The person doing this had to be twisted to do this anyway, so they could have been capable of anything. Horrific thoughts started to enter their minds. Many sat with their heads in their arms, while others closed their eyes and lay back, with the only movement in their body was in their brain cells. Also, what did he mean by the tasks?

What tasks were they to endure?

After two straight hours of dead silence, Piers was the first to make a move. He seemed to be bored, so he decided to enter the kitchen and look at himself in the mirror. He stroked his beard. The others watched, wondering what he was doing.

"Well, somebody's got to do something!" he yelled, "I'm not just gonna sit there like you lazy freaks! I have a life to live!"

"Do you really think that's wise?" asked Lucy.

"What?" replied Piers.

"To call us all 'lazy freaks'? Remember, we have to vote for somebody at the end of the month".

"Now, you listen to me, bitch!" cried Piers, "nobody is going to kill me! I can do whatever I want in here, and nobody's gonna stop me!"

"If you break the rules, you'll kill us all!" cried Lucy, "you heard what the tape said!"

"Screw what the tape said. If that gas comes out, so be it!"

Suddenly, the conversation stopped. Exactly two hours after the tape had finished, the voice said, "this is The Leader. Ray has to come to the task room".

Ray's head suddenly lifted. Was he to do the first task?

"Whatever it is", said Paul, "just get the food".

"I will", said Ray, standing up. The huge bodybuilder walked confidently over to the task room, where he slowly prepared to open the door.

When he entered, Ray saw five small boxes in the middle of the room, and five boxes at the back of the room.

The boxes at the back of the room were completely black, as were the other boxes.

"Hello, Ray", said the voice when the door opened.

"What is this?" asked Ray.

"Listen to the voice, Ray. By the time this tape finishes, you will have five minutes to get out of this room with the pass to the food. If you do not leave this room within five minutes, the door will lock, and you will be stuck in here until next week, with no food for the other contestants".

The tape paused, as Ray knew he needed to act.

"In the center of this room there are five boxes, but only one of them contains the pass to the food. The keys to these boxes are in the boxes at the back of the room. The game is simple: the more keys you retrieve, the greater chance you have of getting the food".

The voice then stopped, and the timer was set. It was quickly counting down from five minutes, so Ray ran to the back of the room to the first box. He had no idea what was inside any of them, but he didn't care. Inside the first box, it felt very fluffy.
