Chapter 5

The next day, after Ruth had recovered from her grueling task, she had another conversation with Margaret. She started by describing the horrific events of her experience. "Honestly, Margaret", she said, “In my whole life, I have never suffered as much as I did yesterday. That was the hardest thing I have ever done!"

"I'm sorry you had to go through that".

"I could just kill the sick, twisted bastard who did this to us!"

"Just watch yourself", said Lucy, who was also listening, "they might be listening to you now".

"I don't care at this very moment in time", replied Ruth, "and quite frankly, I think that they would want me to react this way. This is the reaction that they want, truthfully".

"So why are you giving them it?"

"Because it would look strange if I didn't act like that!" Margaret stared at the walls. "I just wish it was all over!" cried Margaret.

"I swear down, I am not looking forward to not eating for a week. Somebody will fail eventually. They will". That made Margaret break down. She cried and cried as loud as a car crash. "Don't cry", said Lucy, trying to make her feel better. "You can talk to me", she added.

"I just don't want to let anybody down!" Margaret cried.

"You won't", replied Lucy, "just prepare yourself for whatever the task is, and just go in and do it!"

Margaret kept on crying. "If you don't mind, I would like to be alone for a little while", she said, getting up and going into the bedroom for a peaceful lie down. Over the next few days, nothing happened. Piers upset a few people by making inappropriate remarks, but that was all. Everybody seemed to be getting on...for now.

On the next task day, Lucy was called to do the task. Before she entered the room, she was terrified of what she was about to see. She had thought and thought about it for the whole week, and now her time had come for her to do the task, she was shaking nervously.

"Whatever it is, just do it", said Ruth, trying to give Lucy some encouragement.

Lucy walked through the door, where she saw five dinner plates with cloches covering them. She started to get anxious of what was underneath each of them, as she deduced that she would have to eat them. Again, the voice played.

"Lucy, welcome to your first task", it begun, "before you are five different meals. Your task is to eat all five of them. Each of the dinner plates and cloches together weigh exactly 3.154 kilograms. When you have eaten all of the food, the scales below the dinner plates will go to that exact weight, as there will be no other food left.
