Chapter 9

Although Margaret was trapped in that one room for the whole week, she was still able to survive. Once a day, a shoot in the room allowed her to drink from a bottle of plain water, but she received no food at all, just like the others. A mattress was also dropped through the ceiling for Margaret to sleep on, and that was all she had. While she slept, the boxes in the room were removed by The Leader, and Margaret woke up the next morning without knowing who had entered the room, or how.

Whilst Margaret was suffering with depression, extreme boredom and terror of her apparent upcoming death, the others were not doing so well either. Ray seemed to be the one who overtook Piers' role in the house – he was changing his attitudes towards the others, while he started to punch the wall.

The day after he heard the news that Margaret had failed the task for the second week in a row, Ray got so angry. He literally looked like a bull in the china shop. That morning, everything he saw was a target to him, whether it was people or objects. Firstly, he grabbed the back seat of the sofa, and started tearing away at it, pulling out the cotton. He then smashed one of the walls in the bedroom, which was the wall between the bedroom and the living room. He did that by punching it repeatedly. After that, he roared like a lion would, only he was expressing even more anger. The one thing that got to him was Margaret, and the fact that The Leader had purposely chosen her to do the task twice in a row. After having smashed into the walls, Ray moved on to the bathroom, where he broke the door down. The others in the house did not dare to do anything - all they could do was watch. Ray then smashed the basin in the bathroom, and although he tried to smash the toilet, he could not, so he moved on to shoving the others around.

"I thought you were a good person!" cried a courageous Paul.

"Get away from me!" cried the vexed bear.

The entire house (apart from Ray) moved into the bedroom until he calmed down, which took him thirty minutes until he was regretful of what he did. He apologized to the rest of the house - some of them forgave him, but others secretly did not forgive him, only pretending to, careful not to start another scene.

Later that day, after everything had settled down, and the atmosphere was back to its usual, depressing self, Molly was sat in the garden on her own. Out of everyone, she was the hungriest, and the one who was the most desperate for food. She had never gone without food for one day before, never mind two weeks! Then, she came up with an idea. Staring at the overgrown grass in the garden, Molly snapped a few pieces, and shoveled them into her mouth. Even the taste of the grass made her desperate to have more. It brought back the memory of the luxury of having food to eat. She was going to shout for the others, but this would be her little secret, since she did not want the others to have any, and more importantly, she really did not want The Leader spotting her. Very slyly, Molly continued to eat the food, watching out for the cameras. There were several cameras in the house, presumably used to watch every move of every contestant, so Molly had to be extremely cautious. On the other hand, she did not care what the punishment was at this moment in time, as long as she got to eat again.

Suddenly, The Leader started to speak. "This is The Leader. Every contestant other than Margaret must   gather round on the sofas immediately".

That order caused wonder within the group. What was The Leader planning?

It took five minutes of tense waiting for The Leader to actually speak to the group. This happened often, so it was assumed that The Leader enjoyed watching the people wait and wonder about what was about to happen to them.

"This is The Leader", the voice eventually said, after what seemed like an hour, "five minutes ago, Molly ate grass in the garden. This is a clear breach of the rules, and The Leader takes all rule-breaking extremely seriously. As a punishment, every housemate other than Margaret must go into the bedroom, where they will be locked in for two days".

When the voice stopped, all eyes turned to Molly.

"I'm sorry", she said, slumping into the sofa.

"You fat, greedy bitch!" cried Emma.

"I'm gonna kill you!" screamed Ray, getting up to go into the bedroom.

"I didn't know it was rule-breaking!" yelled Molly, trying her very best to defend herself.

"How stupid can you get, eh?" said Emma, "we are not allowed to eat food. Eating the grass is classed as eating! You stupid cow!"

Everybody entered the bedroom, where it was slammed shut on them. Of course, immediately, arguments between the group broke out. "You're lucky Margaret failed those tasks", said Ray, aiming at Molly, "because she'll be the one to die next, not you".

"Stop saying those awful things!" cried Molly, "I'm sorry that I did it, OK? If I'd known we'd all get punished for my actions, I would not have done it, would I?"

"How do we know that?" asked Lucy.

"Stop having a go at me! You're only doing that to find an excuse for the others to vote me off!"

"That is not true", said Paul, trying to keep everybody calm, "everybody is angry at you because you did something wrong, that you should not have done".

"I've done something wrong? What about the loony who's put us all in here and starved us for two weeks?!"

"Fair enough, I see your point", said Paul, "but you still did wrong, and you should accept that".

"I am accepting that, and I've already apologized! What else do you want me to do?"

Nobody answered that. Instead, some of the contestants laid down on their beds, sinking their faces into the grey, hard pillows, not moving or saying a word for a long time. The others copied, except for Molly, who was sat up and seemed to be thinking about something.

After a while, an extremely bored Molly said to the group, "I know what - why don't we play a game?"

The others looked at each other in the eyes, as if to say "who is going to reply to that?"

"What game?" asked Emma. "Well, I'll think of a famous person, and shout facts about them. The first person to guess who it is the winner".

"This is not the time nor the place", said Paul calmly, trying not to make any enemies in the house.

Molly gave up after that. Her jovial character seemed to decline while she was in that prison cell. It may as well have been, for the contestants had no further privileges in that room than a prisoner would, except for each other.
