Chapter 10

After yet another grueling week, it was time for the next task. With Margaret still locked in the task room, she saw the objects in there, but nobody else did. Everybody was starting to grow more and more impatient as the morning passed. Eventually, The Leader spoke.

"This is The Leader", said the voice, "the person doing the task this week is..."

Everybody was sat on the sofa, not moving an inch.

"...Margaret".

Not one second after The Leader said the name, there was a huge roar in the room.

"No!" everybody cried, "please, no!"

"I think they're just going to keep doing that until Margaret passes a task!" yelled Ruth.

"Then we'll starve forever!" screamed Molly, almost fainting on the sofa.

Meanwhile, Margaret prepared to do the task for the third week in a row. In the room, there were three boxes. Before she got chance to study it more, the voice began.

"Margaret", said the voice, "your task this week is to stand underneath each of these boxes, which are in the air. You then have to wait for several seconds, and catch the keys in each. Careful, however, because in case you have not noticed, there is a drain directly underneath your feet, so you might not be able to grab the key.

To pass the task, you need to find all three keys and put them all in the locked safe, making it out of the room with the pass. Your time starts now."

The voice ended, and the task began. There was no time limit this week, but Margaret knew that she had to get underneath the boxes in order to catch the keys. She stood under the first one, with her hands held out. She knew that there was no other option but to pass this task, or else she would not be able to go on for another week without food.

Suddenly, the box dropped, and she saw masses of slime dropping out, and the key was nowhere in sight! She felt something drop into her hand, and she was lucky to find that it was the key. She put that key into her pocket, and waited for the next load to drop on her. After about ten seconds, a tub full of spiders the size of a human hand dropped on her. Margaret screamed as the pushed the spiders away. The largest spider, which was the size of an adult human foot, crawled up her legs, and it would not let go! Margaret eventually shook it off. When she got back to reality, she realized that the key had landed in her hair! She was lucky for a second time.

Still avoiding the terrifying spiders, Margaret stood under the third and final box. It was all or nothing now these next few seconds would determine if she and the rest of the house would eat, once and for all.

After what seemed like an eternity, a box full of cow faces fell on top of her. As it was falling, Margaret caught the key, but unfortunately, the key slipped out of her hand! She tried to catch it as it fell and fell. It was all over, thought Margaret. Margaret helplessly watched as the key dropped through the holes. Luckily, a spider was in the way, so Margaret quickly grabbed the key from the spider, and rushed to open the safe. She grabbed the pass, and ran out of the task room. She did it! Although Margaret had got the food for the group for a week, many of the people surrounding her were still vexed at her with the fact that she had starved them for a week. However, Lucy, who was kind and caring towards her elders, praised Margaret for her hard work, because she understood what it was like to have that amount of pressure on you.

"Don't listen to them, Margaret", said Lucy, "you've done really well".

That put a bigger smile on Margaret's face. After the drama of the day was over, there was a little group in the garden, discussing who they were going to vote for. With the next death just around the corner, the contestants had to be certain of who they were going to vote for, because they realized that the others were bound to vote strategically, so they were going to too.

Molly, Emma and Jack were sat in the back of the garden, away from the remaining ears.

"So, who are you going to vote for?" Molly asked the other two.

"I'm not sure yet", replied Emma, "what about you two?"

"I think I'll be voting for Margaret", said Jack.

"I'm torn between Margaret and Ray", replied Molly.

"So am I", said Emma, "I'm definitely voting for one of them".

"You just have to remember everything that they have done over the past month - Ray is bad for smashing the house up, and Margaret is bad for failing two tasks!"

"I don't know - I think Ray deserves to die more", Emma said quietly, "because Margaret did not intentionally do it. I think I'll be voting for Ray".

"Speak of the devil", said Jack, looking into the living room.

Ray stood up from the sofa and looked at the three of them, wondering if they were talking about him.

"We have to be careful", said Molly.

"I don't know if I can put up with this for another six months!" cried Emma.
