Chapter 4

For the next several days, everything had remained calm. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. Everyone just sat around, having the occasional conversation, whilst waiting for the next thing to happen. They felt it, but they did not know what was going to happen to them next.

On the day of the task, exactly one week after the ten people had been kidnapped, Ashton spoke for the first time. Although many people had tried to talk to him, he did not seem to care about talking to anyone at all at, which was confusing at that point because they were the only people he had. However, many of the other contestants assumed that he was a very depressed person, and the trauma of been kidnapped had got go him.

Ashton spoke when Paul casually talked to him, not expecting a reply.

"So", said Paul, "we're one week in already. That's one week closer to death".

Ashton nodded, staring at nothing but the concrete wall in the garden.

"This place is tearing me apart", said Paul.

Ashton nodded again, showing complete agreement.

"I keep thinking, who's behind all this?"

Ashton looked at him.

"I have my theories, too", said Ashton.

Paul's facial expression suddenly changed dramatically.

"Did you just speak?" he whispered, still in shock.

"I can talk, you know", replied Ashton.

"So why only speak until now?"

"Because I didn't want to. I never spoke much when I was outside of here".

"Well, have you got anything you want to say?"

"Not really, except, I have my theories on whom it is, too".

"Do you think it's someone in here?"

"Yes. It could be anybody, but I definitely think that somebody in here is involved".

"If you think about it deeply, everyone in here could have something to hide".

"Maybe that's what The Leader wants us to think".

Paul nodded. He looked through his glasses into Ashton's eyes. He hadn't really taken much notice of Ashton since his arrival in the house, so this was the first time he had really seen him. Most of the time, Ashton covered his face with his hair, and nobody really got to see his face properly - it was like he was the outcast of the group.

"Maybe that's why we were all put in here", said Paul, "because we cannot figure out who the real person behind all this is!"
