Chapter 21
With just a few seconds before the gas would get to them, Paul knew that he needed to act fast, and their only hope was to run into the bathroom. Although it was unlikely that he would be able to break the toilet off, he knew that it was his only hope of seeing his family again, so he had to do it.
"Come on!" Paul cried to the others, "to the bathroom!"
The others followed, terrified of what was going to happen to them. Their heart were beating so fast that they could feel it humming. After six months of suffering and terror, this was it: it was either all or nothing now, life or death. The whole game had now come to an end.
"What are you doing!?" Lucy cried.
"We have to hurry before the gas gets in. Ashton, help me get this toilet off the floor. Lucy and Emma, stand at the sides of the door where the gas can get through. Someone grab a towel and put it at the bottom of the door. Hurry!"
Lucy grabbed a towel, stopped the gas getting through and stood by the door.
"Oh, my God!" cried Emma, in a state of hysteria.
"It'll be alright", said Lucy, who was in a state of hysteria on the inside herself.
"Hurry!" cried Lucy, knowing that the gas would get through any second.
Paul and Ashton were yanking at the toilet, knowing that this should have been done months ago when there were more people.
"We can do this!" Ashton reassured him.
"Really?" cried Lucy.
"We're gonna get out!" Ashton yelled, "and we are going to return to our normal lives. We're not gonna die today! We're not gonna die here!"
"That's the spirit", said Paul, trying not to get distracted.
Suddenly, the gas started to creep through the top of the door.
"No!" yelled Emma.
"Pull harder!" yelled Ashton.
"Just try smashing it into pieces!" yelled Paul.
"How are we going to do that?" questioned Ashton, panicking. "Well, pull the basin off. That should be easier to pull".
Ashton did just that, and he managed to pull the basin off within seconds.
"Hurry up!" cried Emma, "I'm starting to feel a bit drowsy!"
Emma had taken one breath of the gas already, so she decided to hold her breath. At the other side of the room, Paul bashed the Hell out of the toilet, breaking it up into smaller pieces. After a few seconds, it was smaller, small enough to pull off.
"Get over here!" Paul yelled to the two women.
With eight hands on what was left of the toilet, the four remaining survivors yanked off the toilet, creating a hole large enough to fit everybody through.
"Go!" cried Paul, getting excited.
All four jumped through in a flash, escaping the gas just in time. But it was not over yet! The gas started to follow them, so they realized that they had no time to waste. Because there was no light in the sewers, everybody held hands and walked left. Continuing down the tunnel, they bumped into a wall. It was a dead end!
"No!" screamed Emma.
"That's it then, isn't it?" said Ashton.
"Not quite!" cried Paul, feeling a ladder.
He climbed up the ladder, and at the top, he managed to force open the man hole.
"Hurry up!" cried Emma, "the gas could hit us at any second!"
With the man hole open, Paul climbed through within five seconds. Then Ashton climbed through. Now that there was some light shining through, Lucy and Emma saw a thick, white cloud of gas right next to them! Lucy shot up the stairs, but for Emma, it was over, since she had been caught up in the gas. Emma held her hand out, but it soon dropped. Lucy shouted her name. There was no reply. Lucy instantly realized that Emma was now dead. Paul put the lid back on to the man hole when he knew that the gas was getting in. And then there were three.
"We can do this", said Paul. Strangely, the man hole lead to an indoor building. It looked very blank - the walls were painted black, and the room was dark. The trio then entered a room where there were televisions everywhere. Paul soon realized where he was: the security room for The Leader. This was it - they were about to meet The Leader after all this time!
"We can fight this bastard!" said Ashton.
"He has to be around here somewhere", said Lucy, nervous and shocked.
"And here I am", said a voice, hidden behind a spinning chair. Slowly, the chair spun round, and The Leader revealed themselves. The Leader gave a huge shock to the three survivors, for they were not expecting to be them. The Leader then stood up, where they revealed that they were a man, dressed in a suit. He had black, short hair, and he looked well groomed. The three survivors did not notice him at first, but after a few seconds, they remember the face who they thought was gone forever - Piers!
"I am The Leader!" Piers laughed.
