Chapter 2

Sandor returned back to Havenfield with a smile he couldn't seem to wipe off his face. Grizel had been teasing him about it all night. However, the first thing he noticed had his smile wiped clean off his face.

With his heart thundering furiously in his chest, Sandor poked his nose in the air, sniffing it. He paled when he realized that Sophie's scent was faint.

Where was Miss Foster? Where was Flori? He should not have gone on that date. He knew something bad would happen.

Bursting into Sophie's room, he saw a note on her bed.

Dear Sandor and Flori,

I'm safe, don't worry. Nothing bad happened to me, and I swear it on your lives. Please don't tell anyone about this, even the Blackswan. Before you try to track me with the trackers you have sewn into my clothes, I have disabled them. Please don't blame yourselves for my disappearance, it's not your fault. Don't come looking for me either. Protect tam, linh, dex and glimmer, please. I have already informed Queen Hylda, so she won't blame you either, sandor. Thank you for everything, but I have to go.

"Flori!" he called out. The little gnome came sunning it as fast as her short legs could carry her.

"what happened?" she asked, spotting the note in his clenched fist. Wordlessly, he handed it over to her.

After reading it a few times, she blinked. Setting down the note on Sophie's bed quietly, Flori twiddled her green, smooth thumbs. For a moment, none of them spoke. Then, " what do we do now?"

"We tell grady and edaline that she is missing but don't tell them about the note. Then, we do what she asked us to do." Sandor replied.

"Protect dex, linh, tam and the never- glimmer." Flori corrected herself.

"Protect dex, linh tam and glimmer." he echoed. " Dex has Lovise, so we focus on the other 3," he added.

Flori nodded, and they exited the room simultaneously to go tell Grady and edaline.

Grady and Edaline cried and were in shock. Flori and Sandor looked at them with significantly less pity than they would have originally. They did say horrible things to Sophie even though they might just have been angry and were unaware of what was spewing out of their mouths.

Then they left for solreef, making up an excuse along the way. Thankfully, no one doubted it. Only Tiergan narrowed his eyes slightly, before welcoming them into the house.

Flori and Sandor exchanged a knowing glace, before taking deep breaths, steeling their nerves.

Protect Tam, Linh and Glimmer. Protect Tam, Linh and Glimmer. Protect Tam, Linh and Glimmer.

Sandor repeated to himself over and over again, making it his new mantra.

Protect Tam, Linh and Glimmer.
