MADELEINE TONKS, born October 31st, 1979, to parents she has never known. Quiet since birth, the younger girl sat on the couch, staring at the wall. "Maddie," Tonks called, drawing her attention. Tonks smiled as she sat beside her on the couch. Madeleine returned a small smirk, which quickly faded into a straight line. "Everything alright?" she asked gently. The girl nodded, looking up as Tonks ran a hand through her brown locks. They sat in their usual comfortable silence until Andromeda entered, accompanied by a few unfamiliar, older faces. Madeleine's expression shifted to a frown at the sight of the strangers. Andromeda glanced at Tonks with a worried look, her eyes flicking between the two girls until Dumbledore made his entrance.
"This is the girl," one of the men said, his tone suggesting boredom. He eyed Madeleine before turning to Andromeda. "She's very quiet," Snape noted, looking at Andromeda.
"Of course, she doesn't appreciate strangers," Andromeda replied sternly. "She's not incapable. She chooses not to speak."
Dumbledore gazed at Madeleine, who was now staring at the wall again, her eyes eventually meeting his. "Even as a child, her eyes are familiar. They are just like hers. There is no doubt her mother is who we believe she is."
"But?" one of the women asked.
"But she is to be taken care of and treated as a normal child regardless," Dumbledore continued. "As one of our own." Madeleine turned to look at Tonks, who offered her a reassuring smile.
"That won't be hard," Tonks said, looking up at Dumbledore. "She's already our own."
Dumbledore nodded, his gaze resting on the girl. "Very well, shall we begin?" he asked. Tonks and Andromeda exchanged a glance before Tonks crouched down beside Madeleine on the couch.
"Maddie, we're going to go somewhere," she said, gently taking the girl's hands and rubbing her palms. "And there, you'll be able to use your hands." Tonks's face lit up at the sight of the smile that appeared on the younger girl's face. She then stood and extended her hand to Madeleine, who took it. Together, they left for their destination with the others following close behind.
. . .
They all stood around the girl from afar, watching her. It was obvious that she was frightened at first, but the fear soon wore off after Tonks and Andromeda gave her permission to do what she had been prohibited and trained not to do since she was a young child. Tonks walked over to the girl, lowered to one knee, and extended her hand. The girl stared at Tonks's hand, still slightly frightened, but was reassured by Tonks's contagious smile.
Madeleine lowered her hand into Tonks', gripping it tightly. As she did, the rest of the group observed as a faint light began to trace its way up Tonks' hand, resembling veins but not quite. Tonks pulled back her long-sleeved jacket to reveal fiery lines moving up her arm.
