DELEINE STARED AT THE WALK, THE LETTER IN HER HANDS FEELING LIKE like a leaden weight. The summer had stretched out like a desolate wasteland, devoid of the comfort and companionship she craved. The bright, warm days felt hollow without him— George. She hadn't seen her boyfriend since his birthday—a fleeting visit that left her with a gnawing sense of emptiness.

While he roamed off, involved in whatever it was he was doing, Deleine remained trapped in her own world, trembling with the opened letter.

The letter's parchment crinkled slightly as she gripped it tighter, her fingers tracing the edges. Her eyes, tired and red from sleepless nights, were locked onto the letter. Reading it over and over again.

Perhaps it was the letter that was getting to her, or maybe it was the flood of memories that came with it

Perhaps it was the letter that was getting to her, or maybe it was the flood of memories that came with it. Deleine stared blankly ahead, her fingers absentmindedly brushing the necklace that hung around her neck. The necklace—her mother's, as much a burden as it was a lifeline—had never left her skin the entire summer. She couldn't bring herself to take it off, not after what it had shown her.

The most recent memory, or perhaps it was a vision of the future, had been the worst yet. A dementor attack, cold and suffocating, but she hadn't been able to make out who it had targeted. That was what gnawed at her, the not knowing. And she hadn't told Tonks about it. She couldn't. How would she even begin to explain something she didn't fully understand herself?

The memory lingered in her mind, dark and unsettling, a shadow that refused to lift. She didn't understand why she was seeing these flashes of the future—why they came to her, unbidden, like whispers of things she couldn't prevent.

What was the point of it? If she couldn't stop what was happening, then why did these visions haunt her? To show her how powerless she truly was? To torture her with the knowledge of things she couldn't change, things she would fail to save?
