Beep

Beep

Beep

I slowly open my eyes and slide my finger on my phone screen as I turn off my alarm. I look at the time and my eyes fly open.

Holy Shit!!!

I only have half an hour to reach the hospital.

Yes, this is my life. Hospital, patients, surgeries, chiefs attitude, the typical life of a resident surgeon.

I run into a quick shower and change into a decent outfit.

I am only in my first year of residency and it feels like I have completely blacked out of my social life.

It's not that I am complaining, ofcourse I myself chose this path but sometimes I wish I had listened to dad when he asked me to join his company, atleast I wouldn't have to deal with this type of life.

I reach the hospital and park my car in the driveway.

I take my bag and rush inside and before I can even catch my breath I am standing face to face with my chief.

Yes, my chief. Dr. Noah Williams, the greatest general surgeon of this town. Not only is he a man of great skills but also a man of great attitude. Sometimes I wonder if he's even aware of how many times he's treated me like shit.

I take a deep breath and look at his face but I regret doing it as he looks even scarier than my imagination.

"Sir I am really sorr-"

"Patient number 2467, 3455, 6333, all the reports in my office in fifteen minutes dr. Hart."

He announces and after throwing a death glare at me, he walks away.

Welcome to my life!!!

"Late again dude," Justin, my colleague, laughs and hands me my coffee.

"I swear to God I will, one day, take his position and then I'll look him in the eye and tell him that I am the same stupid dumb guy who used to work under him."

I drink my coffee and the next second I feel my brain waking up slowly.

"Nice dreams," he chuckles jokingly. "Now go to your patients and do whatever doc told you."

I roll my eyes and walk to the locker room. After finishing my coffee, I wear my scrub and without paying any attention to what my colleagues were discussing, I get straight to work.

"Hey, Arthur, what you got today?" Jennifer, my colleague plus a very nosy person, walks to me as she sees me gawking at these papers I am holding right now.

"Just some radiographs to do and then duty in the gyne ward." I inform and get up and do some stretching before starting the day.

"Well nothing new for you, anyways, do you know I get to accompany Dr. Philip in a neurosurgery today."

She squeaks in excitement and I just roll my eyes.

Fuck you and your neurosurgery!!!
(I thought)

After I make sure all the tests are done, I take the reports of my assigned patients and knock at Doctor Noah's office door.

"Yes, please."

I take a deep breath and enter inside. He is sitting at his desk, with his glasses on the bridge of his nose as he is typing something on his laptop.

"Sir, the reports of patient number 2467, 3455, 6333."

I take in a deep breath of relief as I realise I didn't forget the numbers.

"Hmm," he moves his eyes towards me as I hand him the reports.

Just as he opens the file, his face falls.

Please God, help me!

"What are these reports exactly Dr. Hart?"

"X-rays of the assigned patients sir," I reply confidentially.

"I need MRI of these patients, not x-ray," he throws the reports in trashcan and gets back to his work.

I swear to God if I had a gun in my hands right now, I wouldn't think twice before shooting this man sitting right infront of me.

If you needed MRI and not X-ray then why didn't you use this mouth of yours before.
(I thought ofc)

"Yes sir."

I leave his office and curse myself for choosing this hospital for residency.

After a 48 hour shift, I am finally back home.

My whole body has become so sore and my eyes are droopy.

I throw myself on the couch and close my eyes as I try to relax a bit.

I almost jump in surprise as I feel a pair of hands covering my eyes.

But then I smile, as I know there's only one person who has the spare keys to my apartment.

My beautiful girlfriend, Lisa.

I gently remove her hands and pull her next to me.

She giggles and sits with me.

"You are no fun Arthur, I thought you are gonna scream or something."

I lean closer until my lips are next to her ear.

"How can I scream at such a pretty girl,"

She blushed hard and pushes me away and gets up.

"Stop seducing me doctor and go get fresh, I am making dinner."

She winks and leaves to make dinner.

I smile as I watch her leave. I guess she is the only breath of freshness left in my life now.

I was in medical school when I met her. Lisa started working at a bakery shop after completing her degree in culinary arts.

I am waiting for the right moment and the second I find it, I will propose her and we'll get married.

I hope that day is not far away.

Just as I get up to take a shower, my phone starts ringing and I instantly pick up as it's from the hospital.

"Dr. Hart, reach the hospital urgently. There is a heart surgery in ten minutes and you have to accompany Dr. Williams."

This can't be real!!!

My exhaustion vanishes in the air and excitement takes over me. This is exactly what I have been waiting for.

A fucking heart surgery!

"Baby, I am so sorry I got a call from hospital. I gotta go, bye, I love you."

I say in a rush and run outside without listening to what she was saying.
