"He is fine now, shift him to the ward please,"

I sigh in relief as the surgery went successful.

I can't believe this, that was my first time performing a surgery without the supervision of my chief and it went perfect.

I take my mask and gloves off and wash my hands.

After changing the scrub and getting fresh, I sit down.

My eyes land on the ring box which is lying on the floor, I left it here in a hurry when I arrived.

I close my eyes as I feel a lump forming in my throat.

I lean back against the wall and quickly wipe away the tears that left my eyes.

Thank God, there's no one in the locker room right now. I want to be alone.

After a few minutes of letting out my emotions, I feel a lot better.

I get up and gather my things from the floor as I leave the room.

As I make my way out of the hospital, I stop when an old lady approaches me.

"Are you Dr. Hart?" She asks.

"Yes, it's me."

A huge smile appears on her wrinkled face and all of a sudden she reaches for my hands and kissed them.

"Thankyou, Thankyou so much doctor for saving my sons life."

And then I realise she is the mother of that boy.

"It's okay, besides it's not me who saved his life, it's God."

I smile as I gently squeeze her hands.

"After God it was you who saved my son, he is my only  son. I don't know what would've happened if you didn't arrive on time."

What is happiness???

A huge mansion, a latest model of Rolls-Royce, a black card, a party every night, a group of elite people surrounding you.

These things never made me feel what I am feeling right now.

It's now that I realise the path, I chose for myself after leaving all these luxuries, was what I have always wanted in life.

"Thankyou, have a nice day maam," I nod and she smiles again.

I try calling Lisa again but like before, it went straight to voicemail.

I also went to her house but she wasn't there.

Suddenly, my phone starts ringing.

I look at the screen, hoping it's Lisa but it's my mom.

"Hi mom, how are you?" I ask after picking up the call.

"Hi honey, I am very good. How's my son?" She asks in her usual bossy tone.

"Great, a little stressed but it's fine. I can deal with it." I sigh.

"You see now, that's why your dad and I wanted you to take over the company rather than doing this low standard-"

"Mom, can we please not talk about it."

Her choice of words never fails to disappoint me.

"Okay." I hear her sigh on the other side. "How's Lisa?"

"Uh.. good, yeah she's fine."

I try not to stutter as I don't want mom to know about what happened yesterday. It will provide mom just another reason to talk shit about my profession.
