The sun was slowly dipping down, painting the clouds an array of colours from purple, to hot pink and orange. It was a sight to be marveled at. Then it was all ruined by Kaleb's constant nagging about the whole plan. Seriously, that dude needed to have his mouth duct taped shut.
"But it's free candy." Nix argued. She kept bringing this point up everytime Kaleb argued. Meanwhile as they fussed around, I tried keeping up with the group's walking pace but the stupid curtains draped around my legs kept gathering at me feet. Several times I had stepped on the bottom of it and now it bore a few shoe stains.Though if I were to be honest, the shoe print looked better than the actual designs.
"Who cares? Trick-or-freaking treating is for little kids. I'm way past that age. This is lame." He spoke deflatedly. I had had it with this stupid skirt. I scrunched my hand into a fist, grabbed the excess skirt and lifted it a bit so I could at least walk without stumbling round and about like a drunk.
One look at our street and Dhruv had said that we would be going to the street he and Sana lived at, which I didn't blame him for.
As we approached the area where Dhruv lived, the streets looked cleaner and neat. For example, you would always find shattered pieces of glass near our house, cigarette butts, in fact, many times I had made it home with some stuck underneath my shoes and none of the roads had been renovated since what appeared to be years. Uneven levels, small weeds sprouting from the numerous cracks and bits and pieces of Asphalt laid everywhere.
Finally we arrived and just dawdled outside as we waited for Darcy and Sana outside Sana's house which was pretty close to Dhruv's. It was a really nice neighborhood. The area was suburban, seemed ten times more livable and safer than where the agent's house was. The cookie cutter houses all had the same red roofs, neatly trimmed lawns. Each had a small mailbox located at the front and the roads looked recently renovated.
The street was filled with kids in colourful costumes running around chasing one another or loudly screaming "trick-or-treat!" One little girl, probably around three or four, was skipping with her dad and leaving a trail of feathers behind from her turkey costume.
I always hated admitting this but I felt envious of that girl. A seventeen year old envious of a 4 year old, kind of pathetic to be honest but life wasn't fair. I mean, I don't really even remember anything from when I was that young but I know I wasn't skipping down Sunshine boulevard dressed as a happy chicken. And I yearned to be a happy chicken skipping down sunshine boulevard.
"... dye your hair?" Huh?
I looked beside me and found Darcy holding pieces of my hair. Purple streaked pieces of my hair. Shoot. Why do I keep failing at this? Why can't I achieve a simple task like keeping my hair colour normal? Survived a plane hijacking but can't hide my damn emotions. I started feeling anxious out of nowhere.
"U-uh n-no, it's just temporary hair chalk I put on... for tonight. Probably will rub off soon." I ran my hand through my hair a few times, really just trying to mask my heavy breathing, then wiped my hands on my skirt to pretend there was purple on my hands.
"Oh whoops, gone already eh?" Darcy had lost interest already though and was watching all the children playing around. To distract myself from the anxiety and stress of being unable to control my emotions, I looked to see what everyone else was doing.
Nix and Dhruv were speaking, Nix was using her arms heavily during the conversation, this always happened when she dived into a deep topic, particularly something she was passionate about and Kaleb was sitting on Sana's door steps and speaking to someone on the phone. He looked a bit stressed which was weird. The only time I saw him so stressed was when we had lost the relay race earlier in the gym.
