My heart felt like it stopped beating when my eyes landed on a familiar looking face.

"A-Adams?" I choked. Behind me, I heard the rustling coming from Nix and Cairo's footsteps falter as they took in Adams' sight before us.

I heard some voices from behind him and saw at least ten different people from the Academy-including the agents who were at the condo Del, Nix and I were staying at. Everything felt surreal, I couldn't tell if this was reality or my mind making up what I wanted to see.

My knees shook and I almost collapsed onto the cold grass.

Several people cried my name and ran towards me but Adams was the one who swiftly grabbed me before I fell down. Again, I wasn't sure if it was a dream, a hallucination caused by my weakness or one of Johanna's drugs but he pulled me towards him, engulfing me in a warm hug.

"Alaska, dear, I'm so sorry for how I've treated you. I'm sorry I wasn't able to protect you." I rested my face against his chest trying to hold back tears that were threatening to spill. Eventually they did but Adams didn't push me back, he just ran his fingers through my hair, comforting me. A few minutes later I pulled away from him but he pulled his arm around me, keeping me close to him.

"I'm not letting you out of sight until you look like you can deliver a good punch to my eye." A small smile broke over my face and I giggled. Before Alexandra had died, Adams would take the three of us to the gym every week, unfortunately too early for my liking and let us use him as a punching bag. Of course, we didn't brutally injure him but a few bruises were landed on his face, courtesy of Alexandra and I.

"Sounds like a deal to me." I replied back. I quickly turned my face away as I felt my throat itch and coughed a few times to the side.

"Sir, the perimeter's been secured, several of the agents and SWAT members have made their way into the facility." Adams began speaking with him and I slowly lost interest as I felt fatigue overcome me. Nix walked towards me with Mr Scott beside her.

He came over and gave me a tight hug and patted Nix and I both on our shoulders. "I was afraid that we'd be too late." He looked between Nix and I and I laid my head on Nix's shoulder.

"If it wasn't for Alaska, I'm not sure I would've made it through." Nix said. I shook my head, feeling like I was getting unnecessary credit.

"Well-and I hate to say this but, to be honest, if it wasn't for Cairo, I highly doubted we would've gotten out." I shrugged.

"Maybe, but we probably also wouldn't have gone in there in the first place." That was partly true. I'm sure Johanna would've found someone else to do her dirty work but Cairo had done an impeccable job at fooling us. I thought of the first time I had met him, how he pretended to be heavily invested in the drama going on at school, how he pretended to care about me, about Nix, pretending to be our friend.

I curled my fingers in my palm and turned around, scanning my eyes across the area to find him. It was dark and hard to see but the moonlight fell all around us and soon I spotted him from the white shirt and baggy trousers around his waist. What I also noticed was how he didn't have anyone near him that was guarding him. He looked left and right and his gaze met mine.

All I saw a slight shake of his head and then he turned around, breaking off into a run.

Immediately, my night vision switched on. Several of the agents and Academy member who were surrounding us gasped and moved back as they saw me but I paid them no attention. I spotted a red figure running towards the forested area and I sprinted after him.

"No! Alaska! Come back!" Nix shouted. I heard several other people call my name to but I didn't care. I wasn't going to let Cairo escape, not after everything he had done. I would make sure myself that he would pay.
