It had gone completely silent. No one spoke for several minutes. We just stood in our respectives positions near the body. Suddenly a clicking and clacking sound broke the silence.
"Kaleb? Ally? Dhruv? What are all of you guys doing here?" We turned our heads in the direction of the voice. Mrs Lancaster walked towards us looking confused. That is until her eyes landed on Coach Jen's stiff and bloated body and she froze.
"What-I-is t-that a body?" She stared at Coach Jen in pure shock. No one seemed to know what the next move was. Call the police? Run around frantically and scream?
"It's Coach Jen's." Kaleb murmured. Mrs Lancaster gasped and took a few steps backs. She didn't seem to process what she was hearing. Both Kaleb and I held her harms incase she collapsed. I didn't blame her for her reaction. This was uncalled for.
"What even happened to him?" Darcy asked. I looked back at the body. It looked like he had multiple wounds in the abdominal area. Whether the wound was fatal or not didn't matter, wounds bleed and eventually, without enough oxygen being supplied to the brain, death occurs.
The only confirmed he had been targeted because if the perpetrator had been trying to defend themselves, A) they wouldn't stab someone more than once most likely-especially in such a sensitive area and B) They wouldn't hide the body in the closet, they would simply run before caught.
There was dozens of questions on my mind but only one mattered at the moment: Where was Nix?
I hated being pessimistic but I also had to be realistic. Nix was gone. Someone in the school had been murdered. Tyler had mentioned that they had seen coach in the morning which meant that this had happened today. Plus, judging from the state the body was in, it only confirmed that death had occurred around 4-5 hours ago.
"Appears as if someone deliberately killed him." Dhruv gently spoke.
"Oh gosh. The killer must've somehow used the school's system to email me about today's substitution." Mrs Lancaster was blankly staring at the floor tiles and Kaleb had wrapped his arms around her to console her.
She seemed beyond shaken. She was really scared this time. I wondered if this had something to do with the people who were harassing Kaleb. Both mother and son were sporting fresh injuries this morning and now this. Something must've happened that involved Coach Jen. Could he have helped him and someone didn't like that very much?
"We need to call the police, Ally, can you do that?" I nodded and pulled out my phone.
"And we need to move into a classroom until it's safe to leave, everyone, follow me before that nutcase gets us." The keys jangled in her hands as she got up and walked towards the nearest class. As I was about to dial the number, my phone went black.
"What?" I muttered and clicked the home button a few times to turn it on but nothing happened. Even Nix's phone was dead.
"Hey Kaleb, can you call the police? And Dhruv, can I borrow your charger?" We all filed into the classroom and Mrs Lancaster locked it behind and turned the handle down a few times to make sure it was secured.
Kaleb got on the phone with 911 and Dhruv gave me his charger to turn my phone on.
I pulled myself onto the table closest to the charging port and plugged my phone in.
Darcy and Sana stood together in the corner of the class and Dhruv joined them. Mrs Lancaster sat in the teacher's chair and ran her hands through her hair several times while kaleb pulled up a chair next to her and she laid her head against his shoulder.
As my phone charged, I got up and paced around like an idiot instead of finding Nix. What the hell was I even doing here? I needed to help her instead of wasting my time here. I quickly turned around and stalked towards the door and unlocked it.
