~Lucy~
After school, Eliza and I decided to get into action. I would try to sneak into the principal's office to get more information while Eliza would assist me from home.
I started to prepare in my room. It was in the evening now and I would be heading out soon. I put on my sleek black gloves and tied my hair into a small bun. I put on my night-vision contact lenses and started packing my bag. A sturdy rope, some tools such as screwdrivers and a USB that Eliza tampered on.
~*~
'Hey, I've reached. Disable the entrance's cctv.' I whispered into the headset while checking my surrondings. It is 8 o'clock now and the school is closed.
'Roger, you can enter now. The office's disabled too.'
I went to the door and got to work. The door uses a simple padlock. I took off a bobby pin from my hair and twisted it slowly. In a matter of seconds, it went click. I hurriedly unlocked the door and went in,
I roamed around the deserted hallways. It is really creepy. I should not have watched horror movies before coming in. I feel like something is gonna come out of those lockers anytime soon. I calmed my hiked breathing and entered the principal's office. Of course. There is a keypad lock in the door. I shined UV light on them and there were only fingerprints on numbers 1,5,9. Are you kidding me? The principal uses a three digit password which is diagonally connected. Like tic tac toe. I tried my luck and pressed 1,5,9. The door shone a red line. I frowned, my lips pressed in a thin line. I raised an eyebrow as I tried again. 9,5,1. Bingo. It shone a green light and I opened the door slowly. The room is huge. I got onto the computer and waited for more instructions.
'Eliza, what do I do now?'
'Plug in the USB I gave. It should allow you to access the computer without the password. Check if there is any suspicious files and just copy it into the thumbdrive.'
I did exactly what she said and started scanning the files. They were all basic information that we already have. Seems like this trip is us- One file caught my eye.
Monetary transactions. I copied it immediately but as it reached 92% complete, Elizabeth's voice rang in my headset.
'I don't know why but the principal is coming back. You have to get out of there immediately.'
My hearbeat quickened and it pounded against my chest wildly. I can't give up now,the copying is about to complete.
98% I can hear his footsteps in the hallway.
Once it reached 100%, I took out the thumbdrive and switched off the computer and paused. There is no where to hide. I was panicking, I could hear his footsteps in the hall outside. At the general office. My eyes scanned the room. I would hide under the table but there is an opening underneath. He would see my legs. The room may be big but there is no where possible to hide without being seen. I looked up in desperation. That's it.
The air vent.
I climbed up the table and crossed my fingers as I pushed the lid off. Thank god they didn't bother to screw screws on. I could hear the principal punching in the password now. With all the strength I have, I hurled myself up and squeezed into the airvent and hurriedly closed the lid just before the principal came in.
I observed him through the lid as he took a folder out of his desk and muttered, 'How can I forget this. I even forgot to lock the school entrance.'
I bit back a laugh as he didn't even remember that he did infact lock the gates. I wait until 5minutes after he left before I made my way out. I pushed the school entrance, expecting it to open but it wouldn't budge. My eyes widened and i tried again. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? The principal locked it on his way out. The lock is outside but I'm locked on the inside. I can't even reach the locks.
'Eliza. Are there any windows I can get out from?? I'm locked on the inside.' I asked angrily, not even bothered to lower my volume.
I could hear a muffled giggle. That girl had the nerve to laugh at my misfortune. 'You can het out from the stairs at the back of the school. The one closest to the back exit. But the height would be a problem. You would have to climb over the railings.'
'Well I'm gonna have to try. I think I have a rope somewhere.'
I broke off in a sprint and reached the stairs. I secured the rope on the railings and looked down. The exit is just a few steps away and I can climb over it if I tried. I looked down. It wasn't that tall. I secured the rope around my waist and lowered myself down. Step by step, I can feel my fear reducing. When I reached the bottom, I took out my pocket knife and cut the rope such that the top part fell to the ground. I grabbed the ropes and stuffed it into my backpack. I easily climbed over the fence and landed on my legs.
Without looking back, I sprinted into the crowded city of Los Angeles and bleded into the backgrounds of the bustling crowd.
~*~I moaned as I took a bite into a doughnut I just bought. Despite Elizabeth's protests, I decided to reward myself after a long day. I haven't roamed the city since I moved here and so far, I'm liking it. I finished up my doughnut, after some sugary food, I'm craving juicy meat. An outlet caught my eye and I was about to enter when I was stopped by a familiar voice.
'Lucy? What are you doing here?'
I froze before recovering myself and turned around. There, standing in front of me was Ethan.
I gave a nervous smile and stammered 'Uhhh, s-sampling the delicacies of LA?' I composed myself and countered 'What are you doing here?'
Ethan raised his eyebrows, clearly suspicious but didn't question. 'I just finished a movie.' I frowned, clearly not believing. 'With Jacob. But he headed home first.' He added. I nodded slowly, unsure of what to say. Normally I would be getting some information out of him but now is not the right time. I still have the USB earlier in my bagpack. I needed to give it to Eliza asap. Even though I side tracked a little.
'Nice outfit by the way.' Ethan complimented, laced with sacarsm, breaking the silence.
I looked down and realised I was still in all black. Black long sleeved top and leggings with black converse shoes. Typical spy. At least I removed my gloves.
I gave a nervous chuckle and replied 'You don't look bad either.' It was true though. He looked nice in his casual outfit.
'Soooo, you wanna have dinner together?'
My head snapped out and I bit my lip. Should I? 'I-I think I need to head ho-'
'My treat.' Ethan cut me off.
I eyed the restaurant earlier and sighed.
'Let's go then.'
~*~I can't believe I even hesitated at Ethan's request for dinner. 30 minutes later and here I am eating a heavenly burger meal. Ethan had been quite friendly and it was comfortable talking to him. Strange though. I had reports of him not liking to talk to girls. Guess he didn't think of me as one.
I need to bring Eliza out here sometime. She has been staying at home everyday. I really like it here in LA. I mean the scenery is gorgeous and the city is bustling.
After the meal, Ethan graciously paid for everything. Despite his initial promise, I wanted to go dutch as I'm pretty sure I ate more than he thought. Feeling a little guilty, I made a mental note that I would owe him a meal.
We got to know more about each other. We chatted and all and knew like our favorite colour, favourite food and all. I'm glad that I hung out with him because I enjoyed myself alot. I was so caught up in the fun when my phone vibrated. I fished it out and my eyes went wide.
From: Elizabeth
Where are you??? It has been nearly 3 hours since you went out.
I bit my lips. I have totally forgotten about my mission. I looked up and saw and Ethan looking at me curiously.
'Is everything alright?'
I smiled apologetically and replied 'Sorry, curfew is over. I have to go home now.'
'Oh.' Was all he said as he looked disappointed.
I swallowed, feeling sad to part. I muttered a bye and turned in the other direction when Ethan grabbed my hand.
'Uhm, you wanna catch a movie together or something this Friday after school? It's fun hanging out with you.' He asked, looking nervous.
I smiled.
'I would love to.'
~*~'Sorry I'm late. I got you doughnuts.' I stood in the middle of the hallway preparing for Eliza to lash out at me.
Instead she hugged me. Tightly. 'I was so worried.' I gave a pat and reassured her.
'It's fine. Come on let's see what I've got.'
Elizabeth took out her laptop and I passed her the USB. She scanned through the information and said 'Wow. Seems like our target is really rich. He made quite some donation to the school. No wonder rumor has it that the school seems to favour Ethan and Jacob. Given the way Ethan's father has 'helped' the school financially, it's not surprising.'
I nodded as I listened. 'Ethan asked me out on Friday and maybe I can try raiding his house or something.'
Elizabeth froze as she looked at me. 'Ethan asked you out? When?' Crap. I didn't tell her our meeting earlier.
I gave a small smile 'Oh it's nothing. Just a casual hang out.' I replied, hoping to gloss over this topic.
Elizabeth looked at me and winked. 'Given the way you and Ethan are progressing, I might have to buck up with Ethan.'
