How did it come to this? Henry Salvatore thought to himself. Surely this situation was just another figment of his now violent and distorted imagination.

It couldn't possibly be that Lucy Salvatore, the girl he's watched fight off everything that came to her with bravery that even rivaled his own. Be reduced to nothing but an unconscious and vulnerable child laying on a bed of grass in a forest that Henry refuses to acknowledge.

All whilst the moonlight that once lit up the peaceful living room in the Gilbert home. Was now the only light that the Salvatore boy could use to look at his unconscious sister with plentiful amounts of guilt and shame.

After all, he could carry his sister and navigate his way out of the dark woods. Sure, it would take hours. But if it was for his sister, it was all the more worth it.

Yet he didn't. Because he couldn't.

And that was why Henry let himself be ripped apart by guilt as if it was a pack of hungry wolves. Not even trying to defend himself in his mind as his thoughts continued to blame him for it all.

Because for every twig that was snapped in the distance, another haunting memory of their camping trip appeared. Every harsh wind that was heard, only reminded the poor boy of the first and last day he was able to use his power for good. The same day he exploded with excruciating pain just to let his other half live another day.

And that could all be summed up into one little word that held a meaning that could manipulate even the most intricate of minds.

     Fear.

Fear was a complicated being to Lucy. On one hand, it would encourage her to do things that her mind would take hours to think over. Like a mentor. But on the other hand, it would weaponize itself and force her to cower away. Like a cage.
