Chapter two:
The Night of the Comet
▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁

A few years ago if you had asked Lucy if dragons, vampires, and witches existed, the young girl would've said 'no' without a doubt. But then her mother and older twin brother would always try to sway her decision, forcing their perspective and beliefs to rub off on the young girl. And soon her 'no' would turn into a 'maybe' or an 'I guess so'.

And the truth was; Lucy was a skeptic, she never thought that things like these existed, and without her mother or brother to balance out her beliefs, it was even harder to believe in things like that.

Because if superheroes and miracles truly do exist. Then where were they when her family needed them the most, when they begged for a miracle, begged for anything to happen. Only to be given a closed-casket funeral that Lucy refused to attend.

Yet here Lucy was questioning things like before, as if her mother was still there telling her tales of the unimaginable, while her brother was hanging on her every word, fascinated by the tales only to get inspired for a new drawing.

And yes the young girl was a skeptic, but even skeptics couldn't say no to what Lucy had witnessed. What she saw was no ordinary quarrel, in fact it was anything but that. Shivers still ran down her spine as she remembered what had happened last night, her brain still looking for an excuse as to how the impossible became possible.

So obviously Lucy decided to get any excuse, any reason to escape the place where the two fought — which just so happened to be where she now lived. Since she could no longer hide behind her family and find comfort and solace in the fact that they'll protect her, no matter what.

Yet even without her family being here, she still wished for them to come, she still begged for a miracle, or for a happy ending just like in her mother's tales. But alas nothing, no one came to save her, no one was here to comfort her, no one was here to protect her.

She was alone.

But Lucy still managed to keep remnants of her past with her, like her mother's books and pens from writing. Or her brother's unfinished canvases, clothes, and his favorite satchel; the same satchel Lucy has chosen to take with her to school, wanting to keep it near her. While she wore her brother's old Yankees cap from when they went to their first baseball game, even though they knew nothing about the sport, but still went since their mother loved it.

And even if it was just articles of clothing to anyone else, it was everything to Lucy, it was her shield and armor, just like the tales in her mother's stories. But in this story, it seems like no one wins.

With that rather grim thought in mind, Lucy bounded down the steps. Remembering that Zach had told her to walk to school and familiarize herself with the town, seeing as it's a pretty small town it would make sense as to why Zach seemed okay with a kid walking alone. And Lucy liked it this way, after all, being alone doing stuff on your own is every kid's dream.
