Chapter 40

(Katie's POV)

"Do you like me? More than a friend?" Hayes asks not looking at me but out at the ocean.

"What do you mean?" I ask him splashing around the water, he turns around and swims next to me.

"You heard me." He smirks still not looking at me, I nod and give him a confused look.

"Would I kiss you if I didn't?" I giggle getting in front of him, he sits down, because we're in the medium shallow part, so the water is still on us when we sit, he pats his lap and I laugh and sit on his legs.

"I just want to know, who would you choose?" He asks me looking into my eyes.

"What do you mean?" I smile confused.

"Me or Matthew?" He says not taking his eyes off of mine.

"I don't know, I want to choose, but you're both great!" I admit, he shakes his head and looks down at the water.

"I'm not great." He chuckles shaking his head, I lift his chin and shake my head.

"No you're better than great, you're amazing." I smile, he pecks my lips and grabs my waist, I shift uncomfortably and he takes his hands off and gives me a confused look.

"Uh sorry." I say shifting again, he puts his hands back on my waist and moves me closer to him.

"What's wrong?" He asks me trying to look at my eyes.

"It's nothing, I swear." I say looking away, so he can't look at me.

"You know your not supposed to swear on a lie?" He asks me and I nod still not looking at him, he pulls my chin to face him and he kisses my nose.

"Tell me, seriously." He pleads, I break when he gives me those puppy eyes and decide to tell him.

"I feel like a whore, I kiss all of you, and then act like its nothing, I feel like I'm gonna end up hurting one of you, if I choose and I don't wanna do that." I frown, he shakes his head and lifts my head because I dropped it again.

"You're not a whore, you're not a slut, and you're not anything, you can't help that both of us like you! I honestly will be hurt if you don't choose me, but if you choose someone who is gonna make you happy, then I'll be happy, plus you'll always be my best friend." He smiles at me, I nod my head and kiss his cheek.

"We should get going." I say looking around as I see it's getting dark, he nods and I slide off his lap, he gets up then helps me up, we walk to the car, he opens the door for me and shuts it after I get in then he walks around to the other side and also gets in.

We pull up into the driveway and see Cameron's hummer is already there which means everyone is here.

"We're probably gonna be in trouble." I laugh rolling my eyes to Hayes.

"I don't know, they could all be drunk for all we know!" He shrugs, he parks the car and gets out, I follow his actions and we walk to the front door, he opens it up and let's me go first and then walks in after me, it's dark so I grab onto Hayes and he hugs me from the side, he switches on the lights and we walk into the kitchen and see everyone in here.

Cameron, Nash, Matthew, and Madison look up angrily and I let go of Hayes.

"Hey if it isn't the two little runaways?" Madison laughs eating a pop tart and pointing at us.

"Yeah, um we need to talk!" Nash says sniffling sternly to Hayes.

"Hey don't blame him, it was my idea to go out." I say stepping in front of Hayes.

"It's not that actually." He says walking over to Hayes, I looked into his eyes and they were bloodshot red, Hayes walks out and I put my hand in front of Nash and he looks at me, I wrap my arms around his neck and hug him tightly, he hugs back even tighter, I kiss his cheek when he's letting go and he gives a small smile.

"Go now." I chuckle, he chuckles a bit, and walks out, I walk over to Cameron and he gives me a angry look, I avoid him and walk to the island and sit down.

"What happened?" I ask Cameron.

"I'll let Hayes tell you that." Cameron says walking to the door.

"Seeing how you love to be around him." He says not looking back, but walking out of the kitchen, I roll my eyes and sit down on the counter and shift my head to Matthew, I hop down and see Matthew staring at me, but looks away when I catch him, I walk over to him and he smiles at me.

"So?" He chuckles scratching the back of his neck.

"Yeah?" I laugh knowing he has a question.

"I have a question." He grins from ear to ear, I smile and he looks around.

"But I don't wanna ask you in front of everyone." He laughs, I nod and grab his hand leading us to the hallway.

"Would you be my girlfriend?" He asks me, I laugh and grab his neck smashing my lips onto his and he kisses back, we pull away and he smirks.

"I guess that's a yes?" He laughs, I nod and kiss him again and link our hands, we walk back into the kitchen and see Hayes, Nash, and Cameron, Hayes looks over to me and Matthew and frowns as he looks at our hands, I pout my lip and he smiles wiping a tear from his eye.

"I'll be back." I smile back to Matthew.

"Okay, don't go too far." He smiles and kisses my lips, I walk over to Hayes and give him a 'tell me' look, he nods and grabs my hand and takes me out of the room.

"What happened?" I ask him.

"My dad, he has cancer, and it's critical, we have to fly out to see him tomorrow." He says, with his voice cracking, I pull him into a hug and he cries softly.

"I'm so sorry Hayes, do I need to come?" I say into his shoulder, I feel him shake his head and he pulls away.

"No you need to stay here, with Matthew." He sniffles wiping his eyes and shaking his head.

"But your my be-" I start to say.

"I know and thank you but no." He small smiles and hugs me again.

"I love you Hayes." I say and kiss his chest.

"I love you more Katie." He says and kisses my neck, I nod and he pulls away making me frown, we walk back into the kitchen and I walk to Matthew as he walks to Nash.

"Is he alright?" Matthew asks me, I shrug and he pulls me into a hug and kisses me.

"He'll be okay." Matthew whispers in my ear, I nod and hold him tighter.
