"Ma you and pop's need to go on vacation I'm serious about that, you two be working too much when yall know damn well yall don't have to. I have you covered for life ma I mean that". Demetrius's parents are very hardworking Dominican parents who are always working even if they are pushing near their late 50's, Demetrius sadly had to suffer from his parents constantly working. This caused him to have a duty that he never asked for since his parents were barely present Demetrius has no choice but to support his baby sister Alexis well she certainly isn't a baby but she will forever be to her older brother. Alexis and Demetrius were practically best friends yet at the same time, she saw him as a father figure at the same time since she never truly had one.
Nor Demetrius or Alexis resented their parents for their absence of engagement in the two's life but that didn't intend that they didn't want to still have experienced it. Quite honestly the person who was the most affected was Demetrius since he never got to fully experience his teen years as his peers did, he wanted to go get new shoes with his friends at the mall with the boys or be able to go to parties whenever he found it convenient. As much as he would have loved that and been happy with that reality he was still thankful he didn't cause at the back of his head he knew that this whole time raising Alexis was going to form him in various ways as well as prep him for fatherhood in the future without apprehending.
Their parents constantly lived with the guilt of leaving their 9-year-old at home with a four-year-old by themselves, many would ask themselves why wouldn't they just find someone to watch the kids while they were providing for the family but David and Faye hated the idea of asking people for favours when it came to helping them with their children. They were both quite prideful people but that's simply because they hated handouts from anyone, this same problem transpired itself to be one of Demetrius's weaknesses, he too hated the idea of people helping him out when it came to his personal life. He had the mindset that if someone helps you one too many times or even once it would become leverage that they have over your head for life. The older Demetrius got the more effort he put into trying to form a stable and healthy relationship with his parent but he had an emotional blockage that wouldn't let him fully forgive and accept what his parents did to him as a kid.
As for Alexis, she had a different experience with her parents which helped her be able to forgive her parents for their lack of being present in her adolescence. In a grand scheme of things both her and her brother knew he had it much harder than her, Demetrius's whole life was about surviving and providing for his baby sister. When she was near the end of her teen years her brother was already an adult and living on his own and as for their parents, they decided to take their early retirement and stay home with their child. Sadly they missed the big and important moments of the eldest child, which completely crushed Demetrius even if he never expressed it to them verbally all these years. No matter what happened in the past he continued to respect and love them even though it was hard at times.
