a certain blonde traveller swung his blade as more opponents charged towards him. aether fought as if he didn't even have to put much effort into it. well, he had defeated more than hundreds of hilichurls already before he even arrived in inazuma. so it was no surprise that he had mastered the ways of defeating one, it was like a daily routine to him already.

with the final slash of the blade cutting through its flesh, he took a deep breath in while slightly pushing his bangs away from his face with his fingers.

paimon appeared behind him. their conversation was interrupted when they heard the sound of hands applaud him. a silhouette revealed itself from the corner of the field. paimon released a panicked 'eep' and disappeared into thin air once again.

slowly clapping their hands together while walking towards him. "[y/n], what are you doing out here?" aether spoke. "ehh? you were supposed to be babysitting me, didn't kazuha ask you to?" [y/n] put a hand on their hip. "right.."

"kidding, don't. i'd rather help you with your commissions than stack you up with more tasks." seriously, kazuha, do i look like i need a caretaker?? [y/n] scoffed and summoned their spear. something was off today, the cryo wielder appears to be the same as ever but aether felt something different. "doesn't seem like you came out here just to look for me."

[y/n] zipped their mouth close, unsure of what to respond. "ok, ok, i was wandering around and then i saw you here." and decided not to help because you looked really cool handing all of them on your own.

aether still didn't buy it, "did something else happen between you and kaedehara? my guts tells me that he left for a heavy cause." he asked. "you're worrying over nothing, captain beidou needed him for puzzle solving and i wanted to exercise my legs."

"ah.. he didn't mention that." aether sheepishly looked away. "he asked me to keep an eye on you at all times, he didn't really state a complete reason." kazuha was as impolite as ever towards the poor boy, he was easily driven away by his jealousy. though, the traveller knew that kazuha is a really nice person, aether just had to prove that he doesn't intend to steal [y/n] away from the samurai.

"ahem, so, about the notebook i gave you.." [y/n] was quick to switch subjects. "did you want it back? i have it here with me right now-" aether reached out to his bag that came out of nowhere. "no no, i just wanted to know if it brought you any help." the memory of how they got their hands on the notebook flashed back in their mind, making [y/n] drop their smile a bit.

"i found someone around the city to translate those phrases that we couldn't understand, it turns out that this notebook you gave me was a.. diary." aether chuckled. "..i wasn't aware that abyss mages are even capable of knowing what a diary is!" [y/n] was embarrassed as they thought that it could've been something useful.

"aether, i'm so sorry." [y/n] apologized, only to see aether grinning widely as if he was amused by their actions. "i really wanted to help you." [y/n] sighed. "don't worry, it did, reading this gave me a brief idea of what else the abyss' was capable of and their possible next move. it seems that they have planned everything carefully years ago." aether reassured.

"a favour is still open." [y/n] wouldn't let go of the fact that they owe the boy a lot more than just some notebook for saving their life. "still thinking about it, i'll let you know as soon as i have thought of one." aether began walking away, followed by [y/n] as they continued with their conversation.
