Arrival into the dark

(Sage's pov)

Moving again is always a repetitive memory for me, there was never a moment to settle down to spread your roots in the soil and live your life.

Watching the skies darken on our way to a town I wasn't even familiar with, brought a curiosity within me. The deeper we drove to the pathway the road led us, the deeper the forest area got. The trees seemed to shadow themselves, creeping outwards much like spider legs arching out for an attack.

It brought chills down my spine, fog rolling in, making it's way through the trees, onto the wet ground where rain recently hit onto earthy grounds seemly unfazed by it's natural darkness.

My father searched for a good permanent job for years, my family frequently moved. It was just my father and me this time since my parents divorced a year ago. I chose to stay with Dad because we're both closer than with my mother. My older brother, meanwhile, moved to Canada to begin his own life.

This time, however, was different because my father felt at home in a town I never heard of. He had mentioned that he has an old buddy who currently resides there as well as how pleasant everyone was. The town was known by the name Black Hallows; it was encircled by a forest, and there was a reason why one particular forest was off-limits.

People gave it the title of "Black Willow Forest " because it was essentially a dead forest with trees that were withering away and were made out of the darkest wood.

The forest itself radiated an ominous aura. My father forbade me from going. Ironically, the house we moved into was across the path from where the Black Willow Forest was located. Since we came here, we have heard loud howls and whimpers coming from that forest. it sounded brutal there.

Even though it was unsettling and old, I would be lying if I said I wasn't drawn to it. There was something fascinating about it. Anyone else wouldn't hesitate to walk to that forest, so I guess that either makes me brave or completely crazy.

Looking at the dark forest from my window hoping to catch a glimpse of any animal that might be living there, but all that I could see was just an empty forest, skeleton structures of what was left of those trees.

I've decided to sneak out tonight to investigate the forest on my own and possibly discover what animal has been making those frightful noises. Wild dogs must be responsible, right? I tried to rule out other options, yet I wasn't sure.

I silently opened my door and cautiously descended the stairs, trying not to wake up my father because he had work the following day. I let a breath I had been holding back, the cold air entered, inviting me into its chilling embrace as I exited my home quietly so as not to wake my father.

I had the chills run down my arms and back as I approached the path that leads directly to the lion's cave, if you can call it that. These terrifying noises practically continued all night, now it felt different since there was complete utter deathly silence in the air.

Wisps of wind blew through softly, the branches rattled at the contact of hitting one another. Barely any light that not even the moon can cast down upon, even absence of birds and insects made it creepier.

Walking farther into the dirt path, it became darker, colder, giving the sensation that this forest had a mind of it's own to play tricks. The trees themselves were burned, which could account for why they appeared so dead. I pulled out my phone and turned on the flashlight to see where exactly I was heading.

When I tried to research this place, nothing showed up; it was as if this town didn't exist.

Turning swiftly to aim my phone at whatever it was, I heard something sprint by me from behind and it sounded heavy because the ground shook a little from the impact. "Damn it," I muttered.

It seemed like eyes were on me the entire time, following my every move, it made me want to keep pushing forward. Every time I used the flashlight to see what it was, nothing showed up at all.

Whatever animal was watching me clearly didn't even want me here; it was like a game between predator and prey. I would startle at the slightest sound and turn around to see what made it. There was a loud snap of a stick being stepped on, and there was a figure approaching me, slowly backing away." Who are you!?

A deep male voice called out, "Calm yourself, I mean no harm."

With the flashlight shining on him and illuminating his features more clearly, the man approaches me and reveals himself. His eyes gave me a direct look. If he had stood next to me, he may have towered over me due to his height.

He was dressed casually, but I could tell he was well-built because his shirt was a little snug on him and emphasized his muscles. He had indigo black hair that went well with his dark colored brown eyes.

What is this guy doing in this forest, and who is he? Was he here for the same reason I was? I was afraid of being alone in the forest and with a stranger, and I had countless questions.
