Chapter 3
(Sage's pov)
I immediately sit up, groaning as I do so, and rub my drowsy eyes after being awakened by my alarm cloak. Mondays were the worst for me, especially the day I had to go to my new school. Moving was never easy, and starting over constantly made my life feel like it was repeating itself.
As I got ready for the day, I made my way downstairs to the kitchen, where dad had been enjoying his daily black coffee and newspaper. I greeted my father with a gentle smile and left to prepare some waffles for breakfast.
"Morning Sage, and before I forget, we need to have a serious discussion about last night. I'm aware that despite my explicit warning, you went into that forest. Cane informed me of what occurred, and I do not appreciate you sneaking out. That forest is off limits, and Cane has made that clear. If you enter it again without my permission, you will be grounded young lady" his stern eyes looked at me
‘Damn it! Cane really told my father, huh?’ I turned around to face my dad, thinking to myself, "Yes, I understand dad...I'm sorry, I wanted to see what was causing all the noise to come from that forest. Cane already informed me that the culprits were coyotes; I swear not to let it happen again. "
"I'm glad we had this conversation. Finish your breakfast, then get ready. I'll drive you to school. You just need to visit the office to pick up your schedule; otherwise, everything is ready for you. I'm sure you got the online version." After washing his cup and setting it aside, my father got up and left the kitchen.
“Okay, I'll be prepared in a minute!” I sighed in defeat. I wanted to comfort Cane by seeing him again, but I was weighing the pros and cons of doing so because I knew I would only make things worse for myself.
-----
When my father dropped me off in front of the school, I went inside right away. As other students followed suit, the sheer number of people in this school gave me anxiety. I searched the area in an effort to locate the office. Instead of arriving at his house today, we missed the day I was actually supposed to be given a tour of this school.
After following the directions that led me to the office, I eventually found it through the main doors that you walk through. " Hello... I'm-"
"I recognize you, Ms. Sage; you're a day late. Here is your class schedule; try to arrive on time for your scheduled classes. If you get lost, I'm sure there will be students nearby who can guide you to your classes. The receptionist, a 30-year-old woman, didn't give me a glance. She had short, black hair that fell close to her shoulders and had bangs cut off at the front and bottom. She was dressed in a white blouse and wore rounded glasses.
By this time, I had grown accustomed to people staring at me. Being the new girl once more made me feel as though I was continuously reading the same chapter. At this point, I was truly feeling lost; I had no idea who I was, where I belonged, and most importantly, my father was the only member of my family I had since the divorce between my parents.
"Sorry, we arrived a day later. I'll try to keep up. Thank you." I sighed to myself as I took the schedule and left the office, wondering how this move would be any different from my previous ones. I checked the schedule and saw that I had English first. I then looked at the map on the wall in the entranceway; it wasn't very far since it was on the first floor.
-----
The school itself was huge in comparison to others I've been to, but nothing else about it was different. All the other students appeared to be like the others I've faced, though some were naturally a little more curious of newcomers. I stood out, and I would continue to stand out for at least a few weeks.
My father would arrive late because he started his new job today, so I would have to walk back. The town was unusual, most people seemed to be friendly, and the weather appeared calm until night fell, when everything seemed to come to life. Why wasn't information about this location available when I searched for it? Has there been a terrible incident here? My dad seemed to be aware of it, but I doubt he would tell me if I asked.
As I made my way slowly towards the house, I came to a point where I could see Cane standing at the entrance to the forbidden forest in the distance. Technically, it was just close to the entrance, but I needed to speak with him. He turned his head in my direction as I slowly drew near him, realizing that I was going for him rather than the house.
“ Cane, what did you…tell my father about last night? I thought this was going to stay between us, at least you made it seem that way. You know I meant-”
"No harm? I needed to tell your father to make sure you kept your promise to stay away from this place even though your father had already warned you not to go. Sage, I really do not want you to be by yourself in this forest. I won't say it again." After saying that, he left me in the forest without saying anything else.
His figure stopped as I took a step towards the entrance, as if sensing my approach. In fact, I was testing him right then and there. I was enraged and desperate. I couldn't understand anything, and it was forcing me to go forward even though it was obviously not permitted. He didn't move until I made the decision to leave out of frustration. Cane had the upper hand, so I had to abide by his rules, but it still irritated me that he was telling my father behind my back.
