Chapter 8
( Sage's pov )
Tossing and turning throughout the whole night, I was helplessly awake with creeping thoughts that invaded my mind uninvited. It was too quiet for me, not a sound in sight from outside.
I craved anything to break that unpleasant sound of nothingness. The moon seemed to be glowing beautifully, beaming down from my open window and flowing its way into my room. Staring back at me with its enchanting glow, pure white like the first snowfall which begins to cover a layer of white soon to no color in sight.
Breaking out of my hypnotized state, I stood up, pushing the blankets aside to make my way over to the window in wonder to the same fascinating place my eyes were always drawn to.
The trees swayed by the wind of what remained of their skeleton branches, not even the moon can take their edge of what burned long ago once was beauty. In the distance my eyes spotted a figure, it was none other than Cane, looking right at me.
I could sense his eyes already burning at the back of my mind, my heart skipped a beat at the thought of his eyes shifting to green. Seemly unnatural yet captivating to me, a need to find who's truly under the mask.
After some thought, deciding sleep wasn't an option, I slipped my shoes on and made my way outside, sneaking out quietly again. I figured my father was going to attempt to drag me out in the morning, he hated arguing with me.
Walking my way over to where Cane stood was replaced with nothingness, only the cold winds to greet by blowing my hair. A shiver ran down my arms, turning around instantly to come face to face with his silhouette. His hand reached out, brushing my hair out of my face, his soft lips slowly moved to form words
" You shouldn't be out here so late."
My heart began to race, his fingers brushed behind my ear, traveling down to my cheek of what felt an everlasting warmth my heart radiated of need.
" I know, but I wished to see you, I don't like how we left things off. I want the truth, that's all...why won't you tell me? I know you think you're protecting me, I appreciate it, however it'll only hurt me more when the truth comes out."
I breathed out, leaning into his warmth, his hand fully cupping the side of my cheek bringing pleasant tingles. I craved his touch without knowing it. He was shadowed, making it hard to make out his features, importantly those eyes.
" The truth will wait, it isn't your time to know. I wish for you to put your trust in me, Sage. "
Everything became a blurry mess after Cane's figure began to fade and a voice shouted my name. I reached out to grab ahold of him, only to stumble through nothingness that greeted me on the other side, the warmth of his touch was replaced by the cold air that surrounded me now.
-----
I got shaken awake by my father, who hovered over me, trying to get me to wake up. I let out a gasp, breathing in smoke that caused my lungs to burn resulting in me coughing and jolting up.
" Thank god! Sage we have to go! The house has been set on fire! " He grabs me by the arm, pulling my limb body from its sleeping state. He puts an arm around my shoulders, rushing us out of my room, towards the downstairs. " Shit!-'' We were met with raging fires downstairs, making its presence by its heat, both of us coughing from the new arrival of smoke.
My father pushed through, there was enough of a path to get through the fire that hadn't reached our way of exit. We ran out the door in a hurry, my knees gave out, coming onto the ground, gasping for the cold air. Looking up, my father's eyes were softly glowing yellow, causing me to blink a few times to dismiss what I was seeing.
My father turned his back towards me, coughing from the smoke and slowly making his way towards our car, only to stop from the sirens in the distance.
------
Cane arrived soon after, his eyes furious and dark, swirling of anger it seemed. He had offered us to stay at another cabin not too far from here, my father wasn't too keen on staying around.
We kept our distance since making my decision to stay caused a conflict between us. I was testing my father's patience, I knew all well not to do so. Those however were not my concerns at the moment, while a crowd of town's people formed around the place, trying to see what had happened, my attention was caught by a familiar and rather disturbing person out of the crowd.
My heart pounded into my ears, every waking minute felt rather long. Those dark abyss eyes, staring into my very soul, knew all too well what happened. I wanted answers to everything, not believing for a second that this was an accident and nor did my father believe so either.
" Sage! " I shifted my eyes to Cane's figure that came up to me, putting a blanket over me.
" I convinced your father to have you two stay overnight at the cabin I have reserved. Come, Your father is waiting. " He spoke softly, helping me stand up, pulling the blanket close to my body. My eyelids felt rather heavy, causing me to lean into Cane tiredly.
" Thank you...I bet you know who did this? I saw the look on your face, I want-"
" I'm aware of what you want, Sage but it's not the time to talk about this. You need rest." he guided me back to the cabin without another word, leaving me helpless to his silence.
(To be continued )
