(Cane's pov)

I made my way towards the pack in the deepest areas of the forest. My thoughts immediately went back to Sage's expression of inner conflict. I was aware that she was looking for an answer that I was unable to provide. As the current Alpha, I wanted to do everything I could to keep this secret safe.

Sage didn't need to be involved in this fight, but it was becoming a difficulty because Samuel had agreed to assist us. If Sage ever discovered the truth, they'd come for them both as a source of weakness, and perhaps she'd come to discover her family buried their own secret.

I had been bothered by these ideas of all the things that may go wrong. Fortunately, my pack was sensible enough to support me in protecting them should that occur.

As a group, we were getting ready for the upcoming days. There would be another rising moon, and with a witch my family knew had warned us that they'd arrive at first sundown.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the meaning of this new revelation, I had already advised Samuel to leave the town with his daughter. I couldn't risk any surprises.

"Hey, Cane! Back so quickly?" Luan, my younger brother, ran toward me. In terms of personality, he is very different from me. He's a more reserved, sweet and blissful guy.

His ruffled light brown hair, soft and compassionate eyes, and overall sense of comfort made him comfortable to be around. His characteristics were primarily inherited from our mother, but he had his brown eyes from our father.

His wolf was different too, the marking on his wolf is a crescent moon rather than a star; most would argue that the moon is a more powerful sign than the star.

We both were born to be alpha's, I was hoping someday my little brother would have enough courage to raise his own pack.

"Luan Yes, I made the decision to see how everyone was doing and to check in with the pack. I'm hoping that everything will be gathered beforehand." I was obviously paranoid based on the look my brother gave me.

"This time we'll succeed; you worry too much, everything is almost finished and ready. Adina has discovered a method to keep those hellhounds away from our land by casting a spell that will purify it until the next full moon, giving us time to plan our last, desperate attack." I could still feel Luan was as uncertain as I was, despite his assured statement.

"It won't be enough to beat them, just temporarily, my brother. They'll carry on respawning. There is a solution available. We both know in order for this to happen I'd need to find my mate. "

( Sage pov )

I was unable to quit thinking about Cane and that forest even after lunch break arrived. I tried to save myself the bother, but there was a part of me that couldn't ignore this.

I quickly left the classroom and headed directly for the lockers. After taking what I needed from my locker, I packed my bag and sealed it after slipping a couple of my binders inside.

"Someone seems to be rushing,"

I was taken aback by a remark that wasn't really a question and the lingering amusement in this guy's deeper voice. I slammed my locker shut, turning to face a set of dark brown eyes looking into the abyss. I got snapped back into reality when the guy snapped his fingers in front of me to catch my zoned out state.

" That’s none of your business really…if you don’t mind I got somewhere to be." I pushed him out of the way with my shoulder walking straight towards the exit, that guy was something else, I felt uneasy around him and his eyes felt unnaturally dark, giving me the chills.

" Like going to the black willow forest? "

The moment he mentioned where I was going, I froze. How in the world did he know? When I turned to face him again, I saw that his eyes had become even more dark and dreary and were not consistent with the rest of his demeanor. My heart pounded faster.“ No, leave me alone for god sakes, like I said it’s none of your business”

In my haste to get to the forest, I couldn't shake the impression that someone was watching me as I left the school.  More questions kept coming and no closer to getting the answers I wanted.
