( Sage’s Pov)
My English class went by quickly, students rushing out of their seats to leave for the next class. I can sense my body covered in goosebumps from thinking over and over at what the note said. I stood up, seeing Pierce making his leave, my feet moved on their own and I began to follow.
I needed to ask him, I needed to know if it was him I truly saw. " Pierce..!" I shouted out his name to grab his attention. My hands grasped onto the handle of my bag tightly, letting out a nervous breath. He stops from further walking away and turns to face me with a chilling smile playing on his lips. His pitch black eyes staring into my own, making me want to step further away from him as possible.
" Sage, Sage, Sage, a curious one aren't you? All in good time." he smirked, showing off his sharp fangs before disappearing into the crowd, leaving me speechless again.
" Sage!" Emily’s voice peaked my attention back to reality, turning to look at her, noticing how both of my hands trembled. A concerned expression began to spread onto her face. " You good? You ran out of class so quickly, I thought something happened. Was it Pierce? Listen, next time just say the word and we can switch seats. He’s a strange one, I can see how he can make anyone uncomfortable. " She adjusted her bag handle back onto her shoulder that had been slipping off.
" Sorry, no I just wanted to ask him something. I got lost in thought…" I admitted not wanting to worry her, although a part of me wished to tell her the truth of my situation. I needed to know if I could trust her first, I didn’t know her all that well.
" Okay…look I’m here if you need me. I also haven’t gotten your number, maybe you’d feel easier if we exchanged numbers? That way we can text each other and talk more in between other classes. "

I glanced at my phone, now displaying Emily’s number in my contacts. The second class started shortly after, while we waited for our teacher to arrive. My thoughts were occupied with questions about the intention of the fire. My father had assured me he hadn’t left anything that could possibly cause a blaze. To conceal my phone, I held up my textbook, pretending to focus on an assignment that was due in a couple of days.
I found a few articles of fires in the area, but none that mentioned Black Hallows. It's still a mystery why the town has no news reports on it. My father suggested that the residents might prefer to keep this town out of the media for privacy reasons. Perhaps it’s the land itself?
Maybe they want to preserve it as it is and keep outsiders from coming to disturb it or exposing it. No doubt this town has its secrets.
My memories of the attack were blurred, out of fear of something that caused trauma? Those woods held some answers, perhaps if I dug deep enough I would find what I’m looking for. It wasn’t wise of me to go back to those woods after all that had happened.
I was always a magnet to darker things, even darker mysteries I couldn’t explain. There was no way I planned to sit by and pretend nothing ever happened. At least something interesting began to come into my life.
' Sage, Please come to the main office.' The announcements called, heads turned towards me. I lowered my head, grabbing my bag and heading out of class, knowing what’s to happen let me on the edge.

As I entered the office, Cane looked up and his eyes immediately focused on me. I hesitated, feeling his disapproval even without him saying a word.
The secretary then cleared her throat and said," Sage, Cane insists you should be resting at home after the fire. He's here to take you home. You can stay home for a couple of days and Cane here will bring any schoolwork you need to complete while you're away. Take care of yourself while you take these few days off to recover."
I let out a quiet sigh, regretting my decision to come here. I pulled my bag closer to my body," Okay…thank you." Cane stepped in front of me, taking my bag off my hands, and headed towards the exit, bidding his goodbye. I followed him slowly, glaring into his back. " You know why I left, right?" breaking the silence before he had a chance to list any plans he had for me or what my father would do.
Walking towards the parking lot" Not another word Sage." he spoke out coldly, heading over to his red jeep. My eyes scanned the windows of his car, noticing he wasn’t alone, there seated in the car was my father who waited for us.
