Race and Spot had been to together for awhile now. They would often stayed in Spot's room and Race would leave through the fire escape. They'd spend a few hours every other day at the river and by the docks, swimming and splashing. Race was getting to be a strong swimmer. The current was still his worse enemy.

All the Manhattan newsies knew about them but none of Brooklyn's newsies knew. Spot couldn't bring himself to tell them or Race about what happened years ago. Spot was tough but he still had his fears.

Winter was settling down in New York, Race and Spot knew that they wouldn't be able to see each other as often, so they spent as much time together as they could. But it wasn't as much as they liked. It was hard balancing selling papers and spending time together. Race couldn't make it to Brooklyn and back before the temperature drop anymore, so Race spent the night at the Brooklyn lodging house for the last time until spring.

This was their last night together. Race played with Spot's hair as they snuggled on Spot's old bed. Spot had his head in Race's lap staring up the his love.

"what?", Race chuckled.

Spot shrugged, "nothin' just lookin'"

Race smirked, "You's worried you'll forget my pretty face?"

Spot's expression dropped and he sat up.

"aw come on Spottie, don't be like that..", Race hugged him from behind kissing his neck.

"Quit it Race."

"come on are ya really gonna be mean to me on our last night together", Race continued to tease and kiss his neck and collar bone.

Spot reddened. He tried staying calm but Race's kissing made it hard to.

"Fuck it.", Spot muttered, spun around pinning Race to the bed.

Race laughed, "ooh I like where this is going~", bitting gently down on his tongue.

"Lights out everyone!", Eddie called.

Eddie was walking around the lodge making sure everything was in order. He helped take care of the young ones and that everyone was where they supposed to be. When he was done he went upstairs to check in with Spot so he could go to bed. He raised his fist to knock on the door, until he heard noises coming from the room. He pressed his ear up to the door, he heard Spot and someone else laughing and moaning. He kneeled down and peeped through the keyhole. Eddie's eyes widen. That's when he saw Spot making out with the Manhattan newsie. Eddie stepped far away from the door. Covering his mouth so he didn't make a sound.

Spot Conlon is a queer?! He was kissing another guy!! And he didn't stop...

Eddie's head was spinning. Had his leader gone soft? What was he doing getting all touchy with a guy?? Eddie walked away from the door, confused. He had to tell someone...that wasn't natural...Eddie couldn't bare the thought of living in the same house as a queer.

Morning came and Race had to leave. They didn't want the night to end but they couldn't do anything about it. Spot bundled his newsie up in coats that he "found" and a scarf to hide the purple spots on his neck. They said their goodbyes between kisses.

"See ya went it warms up lover boy", Race smiled.

"Go on get out of here before ya freeze"

And with that Race left, off to Manhattan. Spot closed the window before the cold fully set in his room. Winter called for more duties for the leaders of the New York boroughs. They had to make sure younger newsies bundled up before they went out, they had to take care of the ones that got sick or hurt, they had to feed everyone, and had sell enough for rent and their own needs.

Spot put on a old collared shirt to hide his neck. The last thing he wanted was his newsies to find out he was dating someone, that someone being Racetrack.

——

"YOU DOG!!!", Albert yelled.

"Are they real?", Elmer asked.

"Of course they're real Elmer!! He spent the night with his lover boy", Romeo made kissy faces.

"You guys suck.", Race covered his neck, face redder than a cherry.

"I think you're the one who sucks~ if you catch my drift~", Finch wiggled his eyebrows.

"huh", Les looked at Finch.

Race threw a pillow from someone's bunk at Finch as hard as he could. It smacked Finch in the face and he ended up falling over, everyone laughed.

Mush covered Les's ears and Davey thanked him, "Can you not make jokes like that in front of my little brother."

Race was surround and he couldn't escape. God this is gonna be a long winter... He lit one of the cigars Spot got him and the crowd began to disperse to get away from the smoke. Race went to the washroom to look at the marks are his neck. Oh Jesus Christ Spot!

"And so he grows from a boy to a man", Jack joked.

Race chuckled, "shut up."

"I'm not wrong tho~"

Race leaned towards Jack, "Keep making jokes and I'll tell everyone about the time I caught you and Davey in the broom closet."

Jack's smile dropped, "you wouldn't.."

"Oh but I would"

Jack huffed. Race nodded and continued to look at his neck.

——

Spot walked downstairs and all eyes fell on him. A newsie by the name of Abe, stood front and center, his arms crossed. Spot was confused this wasn't their normal behavior. Abe glared daggers at Spot.

"What's wrong with all ya?", Spot questioned.

Abe hissed, "Eddie tells us that you were flingin another guy."

Spot froze, "What the hell are you talking about?"

Abe gripped the collar of Spot's shirt, yanking hard popping the buttons, revealing the hickies on his neck. The room gasped as Spot quickly tried to cover his neck.

"You weren't lying Eddie..", Abe stepped away.

"I never lie.", Eddie stood behind Abe.

Sweat began to trickle down Spot's neck.

"What the hell?!", Spot yelled, "I wasn't with a guy! I ain't no queer!!"

Abe laughed, "you may be tough but you're a terrible liar Conlon"

Abe and Spot had came to live in the lodging house around the same time, tho Abe is a few years older. They weren't really friends but they knew each other. They knew each other's strengths and weaknesses, they knew each other's flaws, and they knew what happened to the poor newsie all those years ago. Eddie came to the lodging house a few years after what they did to that newsie. He had no clue what he had done.

"Time for a swim, Spot.", Abe hissed, venom tracing every word.

Spot's eyes widen as his newsies turned against him.
