CHESKA
Kanina pa ako nakatitig sa maliit na bintana ng eroplano. Any minute now, the plane will be landing. Blangko ang isip ko. Hindi ko rin alam ang iisipin ko. It was one hell of a year. I never imagined I would go to the US to escape ... but I had nowhere else to go.
Narinig ko ang instructions to fasten our seatbelts. After more than 15 hours, we are finally landing.
My mom woke up. "We're finally here, Francheska. It will be better here. I hope," mom said with a faint smile.
I managed to smile back --- a faint one, too.
Naghintay na ang buong pamilya ni ate Florence sa arrival area.
"Cheska! Mommy! Here!" sunud sunod na sigaw ni ate.
"Granny!" sigaw ni Alex at Michelle. "We missed you Grandma," sabay nilang sabi habang sinasalubong ng yakap si mommy.
"Oh, I also missed you my angels!" wika ni mom with a wide smile. She's really happy here.
Ako kaya?
"Cheska dear, how was your flight? Welcome to LA!" ate Florence said with arms open and ready to hug me.
"It was long and tiring, ate," sagot ko while accepting her warm hug.
"Okay, let's get going guys. Mom and Cheska need to have some rest," sabi ni kuya Uly, my bro-in-law.
It'll be a long ride. More than two hours din ang layo ng LA airport to San Diego. I just looked blankly out the window.
Why am I here anyway?
Ate Florence has lived here in California since she graduated nursing. She met her husband here. She had a family here. Mom has moved here since Dad passed away 7 years ago.
Ako? I chose to stay with my kuya Francis in the Philippines. My kuya and I were best buddies. He began acting as my father when Dad passed away. Mom chose to leave. She said there were too many memories in the Philippines. She chose to escape and start a new life with my sister. Everything was fine. I lived with my kuya and his family. I saw my sister and mom when they have vacations back in the Philippines. I get to help with the family business back in the Philippines.
I planned to stay in my home country for good.
But because of one accident. One freaking accident. Everything changed.
The whole family of kuya died in a freaking crash. Stupid truck driver. One stupid act killed my kuya, my sis-in-law, and my two angel nieces. One stupid act took away my family --- just like that. I was supposed to be in that trip with them, but for some reason, I was lazy to join them that day.
After that, everything was a blur. My mom and ate Florence went home to fix the family's funeral. After the funeral, my mom decided to sell the house, the business and every property we have. And decided that I come here in the US with her.
6 months din akong tulala. Mom fixed everthing. I had no other choice but to follow her. Mom and ate's family were the only ones left for me to be with. Wala na akong babalikan sa Pilipinas.
This is going to be hard but since I don't have any choice, I'll really have to go with the flow. I looked out the window. Nice view ... but I still can't appreciate it right now.
"You'll love it here, Cheska. I promise ... " ate Florence said.
"Of course, I will ate. I'm with you guys!" I smiled at them.
I'm hoping for the best. At least I still have them ...

Sorry this chapter is quite sad and gloomy. I have to do this to build up the story, but I promise the story is will be really LIGHT and ROMANTIC. I'm crossing my fingers that I would be able to write the KILIG parts very well ....
Thanks for reading!
