A tap on my forehead woke me up. Multiple taps and whoever was tapping a sleeping girl should know better. I kept my eyes closed for seconds longer, hoping they would leave. Then I remembered where I had evidently fallen asleep; the window sill on the third floor in the library.
The reason I was even in this library was to sort and categorize books, place them on the proper shelf, and keep the librarian some company. It's my job as the librarian's assistant. Now, I pull a lot of all nighters, but this was embarrassing because I was up in the early hours of the morning without being able to finish. I hadn't opened my eyes, but I could tell that the unsorted texts were sprawled across the floor. The only option there would be was to start all over.
Then I heard an unfamiliar voice. "Hello! Are you awake? Are you ALIVE!?"
I shot up to show the boy that I was indeed alive. "Is it already opening time!?"
"No, the library is closed today, but I'm here because I applied for the job," the boy's voice was peppy and reassuring. The bronze hair on his head was just as messy as my bedhead. He had blue eyes, as well; as blue as the ocean. "Oh, my name's Pit! Would you know where the head librarian is?"
Without thinking, I just kept staring at his dreamy complection. He waved his hand in front of face, waking me up for real. "Oh, sorry. What were you saying, sir?"
"I just asked where the head librarian was," he replied, confused by my ability to get distracted by simply being alive. "Is she here?"
"Her friend actually called her away to retrieve some books from a library he works at," I replied, snapping out of it. "I'm her assistant (Y/n), and she told me I would be in charge of the entire library this weekend."
"Is that why you are sleeping here, (Y/n)?" he asked, innocence reflecting in this glassy eyes.
"Oh, no! I was just up late categorizing books, that's all," my cheeks dusted pink. "Here, sit. I'll need to ask you some questions if you want to join."
"Alright!" he smiled and sat down.
"What is your name?" I picked up my clipboard that had fallen to the ground with the rest of the books.
"I'm Pit. Nice to meet 'cha," greeted Pit.
"Ok, Pit. What position did you sign up for, because I forgot who we needed," I trailed off, still sleepy.
"Librarian's assistant. I was looking for a job and heard that this place needed an extra hand," explained the boy.
"Ah, and have you ever had a job like this before?" I questioned, writing his previous answer.
"Nope, but I have worked at plenty of fast-food places," Pit replied, his gaze drifting from mine and looking a little lost.
His stomach growled slightly. "Are you hungry?"
"Maybe," he blushed, averting his eyes.
"How about I buy you some food after this?" I offered.
"Would you really do that for me?" Pit's eyes widened at my proposal.
"It's no problem, but back to the questions." I looked at the paper on the clipboard. "Why do you think you would be a wonderful asset to the team?"
"Well... there was this rumor," the boy trailed off, and I was instantly interested. That's when I remembered about the library's secret. Contrary to popular belief, this was no ordinary home for books.
I glanced to the right of Pit, seeing a book slowly rise from the ground near the other side of the room. "What rumor i-is that?"
"I heard that this library had magic in it!" his eyes sparkled with hope as he leaned closer to me. I refused to tell him unless he made it through one month of training! That was the rule, to my dismay.
"MAGIC!?" I panicked. What if I told him but he wasn't fit for the job? Though I couldn't lie to someone so cute and innocent. "Um, you can always check out books in the fantasy section if you ever have the time."
The levitating book accumulated some other flying friends, which didn't help the situation in the slightest. Oh, where was Head Librarian Covex when you needed her?! The blue-eyed boy continued, "I don't mean fiction, I mean real magic!"
"Well, um, well..." it was like the weight of the entire magical world was on my shoulders. How could this random boy cause me so much stress? His eyes continued to sparkle, and I got distracted. Pretty ocean eyes like those deserved to stay somewhere safe, where no evil spirit haunting the outside world could ever possess them.
I blushed. "You know what?"
"What?" he questioned, confused by my change of tone.
I took a deep breath. "I'll lay down an offer, right here, right now."
"What do you mean?" Pit tilted his head.
"I mean the job; take it or leave it," I smiled as I watched his expression change.
"Yes, yes, yes! I am so stoked," the boy pumped his fist in the air. "When do I start?"
"Right now. These books never clean themselves." I rolled my eyes as more and more books took off. "They refuse to."
"Hu?" Pit seemed dumbfounded. "How could a book clean itself up in the first place? Books can't even-"
Hundreds upon thousands of books swirled around in the library like a hurricane, and I grabbed one to dust it clean. "Turn around."
Pit's eyes grew wide at the alarming yet astonishing sight that filled the library. "W-what's happening?!"
"Allow me to show the qualifications of your job." I stood up and looked back at where I was sitting. Of course; I had fallen asleep and slept on my wand like an idiot. "It's a good thing I didn't crush it."
"Is that a WAND!?" exclaimed Pit.
"Yep. Watch this," with a flick of my wand and a yawn of my still exhausted brain cells, the books dropped like flies. So many flies- I mean books!
"AAA! DUCK!" Pit squished to the window's edge as much as he could, staring at me in aw. For what person just stands in the middle of what is essentially a hail storm, unless they were crazy. As expected by one of us, all the books pounded on the rickety wood floor of the second floor in the library, not even touching my skin.
"And that will be your job, which you have already accepted," I reminded him that the rules had prohibited from running away from this. "But don't worry. Since Head Librarian Covex is away, I will take care of your training-"
Pit's stomach growled, interrupting my sentence. "Sorry."
"And I will have to take care of your stomach as well," I replied, yawning. "Geez, I'm never this tired. It must be early. What time is it anyway?"
"It's actually dinner time in an hour or two," Pit replied sheepishly.
I almost choked on my own spit. "WHAT!?"
