Y/n's POV

Usually, I'm at home lying in my bed, on my couch, or even on the floor during weekends. While it's a comforting part of my routine I'll be honest, it does start to get old. Which is why I decided to try something new, something more productive.

I decided to start volunteering to take care of sticky, snotty little kids. May not sound like the biggest upgrade of my time but it's a way to spend it nonetheless. Let's get one thing straight, I'm not a kid-hater (I don't get why people are so proud to call themselves one) but I definitely don't love the idea of them– or more like I've never been good with them. So getting that fact out of the way, it's no surprise that I suck at my role.

"Ms. Y/n! Tommy won't stop pulling my hair!" one of the little girls, Jenny, cried out.

I sighed and grasped Tommy's hand, trying my hardest to gently uncurl his surprisingly strong grip. When I finally managed to pull him away, I tried to put on my best nice but stern voice to reprimand him,

"Tommy, you need to stop pulling other kids' hair. This is the third time this week I've had to tell you. You don't want me to have to talk to your parents about it do you?"

And just like that I made another kid start bawling their eyes out. I groaned when I realized what I'd done because once one of them starts crying, it was like a plague the way it spreads from child to child.

I don't think I'm very well trained for this and even though I only have five 6-year-olds in my care, I still manage to get overwhelmed. I gathered all the crying kids together which mind you, was a total of three out of the five, and sat on my knees in front of them.

"Don't cry. Remember your favorite person is coming today!" I exclaimed.

The effect of my words was almost instant as they all stared at me with wide eyes, the remaining two children scrambling their way over.

"Yup, Mr. C/n is gonna be here soon to play with you all," I glanced up at the glass door and mustered up some more excitement to add to my voice, "In fact, look at the door! He's here already!"

All the kids jumped up to their feet and crowded around C/n's legs as he walked into the room with a grin on his face. If it weren't for the immediate relief that coursed through me, I probably would've gotten a little jealous over the fact that the kids don't react with nearly as much enthusiasm whenever I show up.

C/n walked, well more like shuffled, his way over to me and I gave him a polite smile.

"Hey Y/n you look tired," he glanced down at the kids, "Have you ruffians been giving Ms. Y/n a hard time?"

A chorus of innocent no's followed and my smile only grew wider.

"No, they just make me so happy that I don't have enough energy left," I explained.

C/n started smirking, "Oh really?"

I pretended to ignore his knowing grin, "Uh huh."

"Well come on kids let's go outside to play!" C/n exclaimed with an enthusiasm that I envied.

They all started shouting with glee as we walked outside, almost tripping over each other in their haste to get outside. C/n carried one kid on his back as he held the hands of two others. I took Jenny's and Tommy's hands and we walked in our small but loud group to the park. I made sure to hold on tight once we got to the sidewalk remembering the day I almost got a heart attack because Tommy decided to run towards a ball he saw across the street. He slipped out of my grasp just as oncoming traffic came. Thankfully the cars screeched to a halt just in time. I literally cried from relief when I reached him and he was safe back in my hold.

C/n glanced behind him to check on me as if he were remembering that day too. I gave him a reassuring smile.

We let them run loose in the small playground as we sat down on the bench where we were able to rest while still keeping an eye on them. It was only 3 minutes before I heard the familiar crying of Rachel as she ran towards us.

"I have a boo boo!" she cried out as snot dripped out of her nose.

Although I'm not very fond of kids, or I wasn't before I took up this job, I still can't help but feel a small part of my heart break anytime I hear the pained crying of a child.

I picked up Rachel onto my lap as C/N scooted closer to examine her.

"Can you show me where it is so we can make it better?" I soothed.

She quivered as she pointed to her knee where a small scrape was and I hugged her as C/n reached for his backpack where the band-aids were.

"It's alright sweetie, you're alright see? Remember you told us you're 6 now and that means you're a big, strong girl right?" I asked as I positioned her so that C/N could place the Mickey Mouse-themed band-aid on her knee.

She stiffly nodded and managed to stop her sobbing, but tears still gently slid down her face. C/N grabbed a cloth and wiped away her tears and snot as he leaned over the both of us.

"Ms. Y/n and I are right here to help you, Rachel, so you don't have to worry about being big and strong all by yourself," C/n told her.

I ran my fingers through her hair as I held her and the tears slowly stopped falling until she fell asleep from exhaustion. I couldn't help but let a smile form on my face when I realized she had stopped crying,

"Look! I finally did it!" I quietly exclaimed in glee.

C/n grinned and patted my head, "Yup, you finally got a kid to stop crying. I'm very proud, but you've still got a long way to go before you get to my level."

I huffed and turned my head back to the rest of the kids who were playing on the slightly crowded playground.

"I'm just kidding," C/N said as he rested his arm on the back of the bench and behind my shoulders.

"I know," I smiled when I glanced back to his face.

"My, what a lovely family!"

I looked toward the voice alarmingly, "Um actua-"

The woman smiled brightly, the wrinkles near her eyes crinkling adoringly, "These little ones don't stay small for long, so enjoy it while it lasts! Next thing you know they'll be all grown up and you won't even know where all that time went!"

"Thank you," C/N smiled as his hand curled around my shoulder, sliding me closer to his side, "We'll keep that in mind."

I couldn't help but stare in astonishment while the woman nodded her head approvingly and continued on her way.

"What was that about?" I started to ask.

"WAHHH! MS. Y/N! MR. C/N! WE WANT CUDDLES TOO!"

Suddenly the rest of the kids were piled onto C/n and I and what I was about to say was long forgotten as my breath quickly left my lungs.

"Alright, alright, there's enough cuddles to go around but stop squishing Ms. Y/n. She's gonna become as flat as a pancake and then how will she be able to cuddle you all?" C/n gently scolded.

I inhaled loudly as a couple of the kids shifted their weight onto C/n and I couldn't help but start laughing at our predicament.

I looked over to C/N only to find that he was already staring at me with a large smile on his face. I couldn't help but melt a bit at the sight of him lovingly holding three of the kids, leaving Rachel and Jenny to cuddle up to me. I smiled brightly in return.

Ok, maybe I can start getting used to these cute little bundles of trouble.
