The past- Before their marriage

It was late, very late in the evening and Scarlett had just come home from work.

She rubbed her face tiredly and kept her keys in the bowl on the table by the door.
She yawned tiredly from the hectic day at work.
She was also confused about a colleagues behaviour towards her. The passive advancements and his undivided attention which was always on her had started to make her extremely uncomfortable in her workplace which Alexander had always wanted to make sure was safe for his employees.

She wanted to confront him about it but was very scared.
Scarlett didn't do well with confrontation.

After that one incident, she completely closed off and became inexpressive and had shut herself off from the possibility of making new friends.

Being the first real job she had taken up Alexanders company and the job mattered a lot to her. She was scared that what if he fired her or the male colleague did something like him?

She decided to ignore him and his moves. Taking a long hot shower, she went to bed.

Present-day (Before the manager's selection meeting )

"Scarlett can you please check all the emails and reply to them?", Chris her colleague said.

" That is not my job that's the assistant job. Ask him to. I already have a lot on my plate.", she said with a polite and a rather forced, smile on her face.

Scarlett stood up, fed up with her colleagues immature and unprofessional behaviour.

She walked towards Alexanders cabin and asked his secretary to see if he was free for a while.

His secretary gave her the clearance and she thanked him and then walked in.

Alexander was deeply invested in his work when a knock disrupted his work.

He looked up to see Scarlett on the door and nodded his head as if asking her to come in.

"Mr Knight are you free? I have some work.", she said hesitating a bit.

" Yeah. Give me one minute. Take a seat, Scarlett.", he said not taking his eyes off the papers he was reading.

A minute soon turned into fifteen when Alexander was finally free.

"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting. You can tell now.", he said.

"It's a rather hypothetical situation you know. What if a male employee was making another female employee uncomfortable and giving her weird looms and trying to touch her? Is there a policy to protect the female employee?", she asked.

Alexander knew that this wasn't just a hypothetical situation.

" Whos bothering you Scarlett?", he said looking her in the eyes.

"Me? Huh, no one is bothering me, Mr Knight.", she said with a nervous chuckle.

Alexander stood up from his chair and walked towards her and sat on the desk in such a manner that she was directly in front of her.

Gripping the sides of her chair, he leaned down, looking her in the eye as he whispered near her ears, his hot breath fanning her face and making her slightly nervous but surprisingly in a good way," Dont lie to me Carina."

Scarlett took in a shaky breath before looking down at her intertwined hands on her lap.
"Jonathon. But I promise I did not do anything to provoke him and I never returned his gaze or said something that gave him the wrong idea Mr Knight.", she said.

Alexander lifted her frail face gripping her chin with his fingers and making her lookup.

Her small frame looked up and gave a scared yet confused expression.

"Carina, it is not your fault that he looks at you the wrong way. It is never the fault of the girl do you hear me?", he said.

Scarlett merely nodded not believing him.
After all, how could she, when she knew that he was wrong.
It must have been something that she had done that ignited him.

But she did not dare to speak up.
"Also, I wanted to thank you for saving my life that day. Had you not come and stopped the man then he would have- I don't even want to think of it. I should have not gone through that road knowing that there were people like him looming in the corners that late at night in nothing but a short dress. I really don't wear that type of clothes you know? But it was our dress code and I needed the job. Thank you so much, Mr Knight."

Alexander was shocked, to say the least.

How could a girl think like that? How could she possibly believe that it was her who was at fault and not the drunken bastard who assaulted her.

"Scarlett it was not and will never be your or any other girl in your positions fault. Am I clear?", he asked.

Scarlett was still not sure if she could believe his words.

After all, after that incident, society had conditioned her thinking process and this was imprinted on her brain.

But with Alex, this was going to be a new start.

And in due time she would learn that it was not and would never be her who was at fault.
