iv. meeting in the woods
THAT NIGHT, SELENA AND CASPIAN walked to the clearing where he would be talking to the Narnians.
"They are going to tear your apart," she said, arm folded as she walked alongside the prince.
"I am a prince, surely that will mean something to them," he said and she scoffed, "whats so funny?"
"You might want to get off your high horse your majesty, because they don't like the Telmarines," she said, walking ahead of him.
"What do you mean?" He asked, rushing after her. He noticed the bandage was still on but the small wound had already healed.
He entered the circle and it closed after him. As he looked around at all the Narnians angry faces, he knew that she was right and they were going to be that accepting of him or his ideas to unite Narnia and Telmar.
They yelled at him as he stood in the middle, calling him a Telmarine liar, a monster, an outsider.
"All this horn proves is that they've stolen yet another thing from us!" Nikabrik yelled out, Caspian looking over at him with a hurt expression.
He looked over at Selena who glared at Nikabrik. She hated him for some unspoken reason, he was just not an easy person to get along with.
"I didn't steal anything," Caspian promised, his voice weak and timid, something that the Narnians wouldn't except.
"Didn't steal anything? Shall we list the things that the Telmarines have taken?" Some minotaur yelled out, waving his axe around.
They listed things like their homes, their freedom, their homes, their lives. But most importantly, Narnia.
"Hey!" Selena yelled out as she walked into the clearing where Caspian was surrounding, "He may be a Telmarine, but he found that horn and we need to give him a chance to explain,"
They all quietened down slightly, listening to Caspian as he questioned the crowd, "You would hold me accountable for all the crimes of my people?"
"Accountable, and punishable," Nikabrik said, hatred in his eyes.
"That's rich coming from you, dwarf. Or have you forgotten it was your people who fought alongside the white witch?" Selena asked, Nikabrik glaring at her.
"And I'd gladly do it again, if it would rid is of these barbarians," he yelled back, pointing at Caspian.
"Then it's lucky that is is not in your power to bring her back," Trufflehunter said, the rest going silent, "Or are you suggesting that we ask this boy to go against Aslan now?"
People shouted at that sentiment, the trust and believe in Aslan ran thick in the group, everyone having some reason to believe.
"Some of you may have forgotten, but we badgers remember well, that Narnia was never right except when a son of Adam and a daughter of Eve was king and queen," Badger said, everyone listening to him.
"Hes a Telmarine," Selena said, speaking against Caspian for the first time, "Why would we want him as our king?"
She wanted to believe that she had just imagined the hurt that crossed his face as she asked that question, but it was clear as day.
"Because I can help you," he said, making eye contact with the girl, "Beyond these woods, I'm a prince,"
He looked around at the Narnians who just listened to his speech. He saw Selena listen eagerly, a questioning look on her face.
"The telmarine throne is rightfully mine. Help me claim it, and I can bring peace between us," He promised.
Nobody spoke and Caspian started to worry, until Glenstorm walked forward, "It is true, the time is ripe. I watch the skies, for it is mine to watch as it is yours to remember, Badger,"
Caspian looked at the Centaur with a mix of disbelief and awe that he was real, and that he was listening to what he had to say.
Glenstorm continued, "Tarva, the Lord of victory and Alambil, the Lady of peace have come together in the high heavens. And now here, a son of Adam has come forth to offer us back our freedom. And with the Daughter of Eve, we may succeed,"
Some Narnians looked over at Selena who held her head high, despite the fact that she had grown up in these woods, she was still Telmarine by blood.
That was something she didn't discuss with many people. If her parents wouldn't have been murdered by Miraz, she would have grown up as a lady of the court and may have even known Caspian.
"Is this possible?" A squirrel in the tree asked, "Do you really belive there could be peace?"
Caspian turned to him, "Two days ago, I didn't belive in the existence of talking animals, or dwarves, or centaurs, or even women living in the woods," he said.
He looked over to Selena who just shook her head, hiding the smile on her face as she watched Caspian continue his speech to the Narnians.
"Yet here you are, in strength and numbers that we Telmarines could never have imagined," he explained, "Whether this horn is magic or not, it brought us together, and together, we have a chance to take back what is ours,"
"If you will lead us, then my sons and I-" Glenstorm pulled out his sword as his sons followed suit, "-offer you our swords,"
The other Narnians pulled out their swords, Caspian watching Selena as she hesitated before pulling out her sword, holding it up high with her other Narnians.
"And we offer you our lives, unreservedly," Reepicheep said, Caspian looking down at him.
"Miraz's army will not be far behind us Your Majesty," Selena said, Caspian looking over at her, nodding his head.
"If we are to be ready for them, we need to hurry to find soldiers and weapons," he said, everyone listening to him, "I'm sure they will be here soon,"
