Everyday, they cross each other. Everyday, they have to look at each other. Everyday, they're always compared to each other. Everyday, they're always having to deal with people confusing them for each other, but not anymore. They've had enough. There can only be one. This... is The Tale of Two Lukes.
Tall Luke runs to Steele High School with huge strides. He looks at his watch, and then runs faster. He goes through the gates, and slows down, hoping Mr. Deter won't see him. He goes undetected as he assembles his instrument. He walks out of the band hall, and runs onto the field for morning rehearsal.
As the show goes on, he can't help but to notice that Short Luke is constantly looking at him. Peering him through the corner of his eye. Tall Luke find it odd. He carries through with the rehearsal.
After rehearsal, Short Luke skips the wrap up. He didn't want to see or hear him. He didn't even want to have the misfortune of accidentally touching his hand during the wrap up. Short Luke decided, at that very moment, that no more will he be referred to as "Short Luke". No more does he have to be compared to what he deemed inferior. There could only be one. As his internal monologue goes on, everyone around him looks at him as if he were crazy. He mutters his grievances under his breath with tight fists.
Hours pass. The school day goes by sluggishly. Tall Luke gets out of third period band. Finally. He doesn't have to repeat the same measures over and over again just because the trumpets or clarinets keep on messing up. He takes a deep breath in, and sees Short Luke. He smiles and waves at him.
"Hey Luke!" He looks down at him.
"Cretin." Short Luke says it disgustingly. He couldn't believe Tall Luke had the audacity to say hey. He pins his eyes onto Luke's eyes, and stares darkly at him. His head is slightly tilted down. There's a slight aura around Short Luke as he passes Tall Luke, purposefully bumping his upper arm with his shoulder. Tall Luke looks back at him, and wonders what's gotten him in such a bad mood. He shrugs it off and walks to his next class.
During 4th period, Short Luke skips, and hides in the locker room. He viciously scribbles on a piece of paper, thinking up of ways to permanently get rid of Tall Luke. An idea hits him. His eyes light up as he looks ahead of him, his mouth slightly agape.
"I can make him quit band by overthrowing the band directors and becoming the new one", he stands up swiftly, smiling at his genius idea. He thinks about ways he can do it.
"Hmm... maybe I can poison them?" He ponders it more, and then gasps.
"I know! I can put slide oil into their drinks! That's perfect!" He smiles widely as he gets out his slide oil from his case. He gets out of the locker room through the small band hall, and carefully goes into Mr. Deter's office. He opens the door carefully, and then closes it. He goes into a blind spot, and pours the slide oil into his cup of coffee. He leaves, and goes back into the small band hall. His plan was too perfect. He puts the slide oil into his backpack to be thrown away later.
After school, the band gets ready for a football game. Mr. Palmer and Mr. Deter are talking out in the halls. Mr. Deter has a cup of coffee in hand. He notes how strange it tastes, but doesn't think much of it as it's a new brand he's trying out. Short Luke creeps into Mr. Palmer's office, and sneaks in the slide oil in his cup as well. He leaves as Mr. Palmer and Mr. Deter finish their conversation. Mr. Palmer goes into his office and leans back into his chair. He closes his eyes and relaxes for a bit before reaching out and taking a sip of his coffee.
