-----------------------------------------------------------------

I was falling... I knew not from where, or where to.

I was just plummeting downwards...

Down...

Down...

Down...

And then...

~~~~~~~
I woke with a start to find that I was having the same dream as last night... and the night before.
I was always falling... surrounded by emptiness.
I never got to the end of that dream...
It always ended with a scream... the same scream each time.
Little did I know how much significance that scream had...
~~~~~~

I put on a warm coat, and trudged down the snow-coated street. My boots were soaked, and an icy chill ran up my legs.

The streets were deserted... but I guess that's all you can expect when it's three in the morning...

I could see my cold breath puffing out into the air...

I looked up to the sky... seeing the many stars...

The many stars that made up infinity...

The snow was falling on my skin... melting on my face.

And for the first time in my life... I realised how small I was...

A single person... a single being...

Not everything revolved around me...

~~~~~~
The sun was just slipping above the horizon, and its warmth touched my skin...
That warmth... that warmth that gleamed through those metal bars every morning...
The only warmth that I had felt for the past 10 years...
~~~~~

I dragged myself back home. Wendy wanted me to go with her on a job that day.

I had to borrow some clothes from Lucy to wear around...

She had some weird outfits in that wardrobe...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kanata, how about this one?" Lucy asked.
I looked at it blankly. Is this what fashion had come to?
"Um... got anything... less... showy?" I asked.
"Showy? What do you mean?"
I stared at the outfit again.
"You know... I guess it just shows a lot... of skin..." I wasn't sure how else to put it.
"Oh... okay then. Um... I might have something else..." she replied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, then I was stuck wearing a singlet top with a short skirt. I was going to have to do some of my own shopping eventually...

~~~~~
Wendy met me out the front of the guild. She was holding a job request and waving at me. I held my hand up briefly and continued to walk towards her.
"Ohayo Kanata-san!" she said excitedly.
"Morning Wendy," I replied. "What job are we doing?"
"I found a really easy one! Because I'm not good at any others!" she laughed.
Just seeing her smile motivated me to wake up every morning.
"Is Carla coming?" I asked, noticing her standing at the guild entrance.
"No. Erza asked her to do something... She said you'd be responsible enough." She smiled again.
"Haha... we'll have to see about that." I said.
I turned to Carla.
"We'll be fine."
"I'm sure you---" She gasped and her eyes widened.
"Carla?! Do you see something?" Wendy frantically asked her.
"No... it's nothing... Just... come home soon..."
"Okay! See you later!" Wendy called back to her.
I turned to see Carla, locking me in a deep stare.
I waved and smiled. She turned her head and slowly walked back into the guild.
If only... If only...
~~~~~

We wandered through a quiet forest.

"So, where are we headed?" I turned to Wendy.

"Um... the map looks like it leads up there." She pointed to a mountain in the distance.

Yeah... easy request much... I thought.

"And... we're collecting a flower?" I asked.

"Hai." She nodded. "Apparently it only blooms once every 95 years!"

"What for?"

"Some revival technique..."

"Oh. Ok."

~~~~~
We were descending the mountain by mid-afternoon, and we had collected the flower in a special pouch in Wendy's backpack.
"Hey, I forgot to ask, who is this request for?"
"Some guild called... Trans-Demon."
Suddenly realisation had hit me. Revival technique?! That flower mustn't be used...
I grabbed the flower without thinking and threw it over the side of the cliff.
"Kanata-san?!?!?!" she yelled at me.
"I-I'm sorry... but that flower must never be found again..."
"Kanata-san!!! Why?"
"They're going to do it..."
"Kanata-san?"
"Holy crap... they're going to do it..."
I grabbed her by the shoulders. Suddenly I lost all control over myself.
"Wendy!!!! We're all going to die!!!!" a smile spread across my face without me even realising.
She went pale.
"Please stop---" She suddenly gasped. "KANATA-SAN!!!!!" She started to scream. Tears were streaming down her face. "Please!!! Your face!!!!" She was desperately trying to break from my grasp.
I looked in to the shimmering lake below us. The wind started to blow harshly.
My face was half black... spreading across my left cheek. My eye looked like it was about to flake away. My pupil was a deep red. It had purple cracks coming out of it, following the darkness that was consuming my face.
"They're coming..." I showed Wendy a final smile before the darkness consumed the majority of my brain, and I collapsed to the ground.
