"Are you seriously not going to speak?" shouts Mother. "Stop staring at me and answer me!" she continues. "Oh dear, what did I ever do to have a boring daughter like you? You can't even do anything like any of the other young ladies here in Loxley. You're turning eighteen now, and all you do is read books. One day Silvie Huxley, just one day, no man will ever marry you and you will come begging me for money." Mother continues with a sigh. "I don't need no man, I have myself, isn't that enough?" I responded. "Then what? A woman cannot earn money on her own, you know that!" She exclaims.
My mother worries about our future, a lot. As for me, not once have I ever thought about it. I don't want to marry a rich man who loves me just because of my looks, I want a man who would look at me and love me for who I am. Yet, I am sure no man would ever look at me that way.
"Oh Sylvie Huxley, What am I supposed to do if you dishonor our name?" she said. "I won't, I promise," I replied. She looked me in the eye, sighed and said, "Alright then, I'll try to take your word for it," she paused and asked, "Could you at least get some things for me in the market?"
I grabbed the list Mother made and a bag to place the goodies in. The previous time I went here, I got lost in the crowd and Mother had a hard time locating me, but there was this man who found me and returned me to my mother. Which is why I don't really visit the town square too often. I remembered how much I hated the bustling streets and the noise of vehicles. It was never truly serene, but perhaps now it's different.
