Chapter 35
"YOU GOT THAT JAMES DEAN DAYDREAM LOOK IN YOUR EYE!" Ellie and I shout the words to Style by Taylor Swift. I take a lick off of my triple scoop chocolate cone.
"Oh my god, you're so old school!" Ellie laughs as she takes a big bite out of her mint chocolate chip, causing her to get ice cream on nose and all around her mouth.
"Oh my god, you look like an idiot!" I laugh as well. We're in her red convertible, top down and driving down old country roads.
"How do you not like mint chocolate chip? Isn't that, like, a sin?" Ellie shakes her head.
"Mint is only good by itself." I argue and shake my head in disgust. "Gross!"
"Take it back!" Ellie shouts, looking at me with horror. "Take it back!"
"Never!" I yell.
"You have something wrong with you." She smiles spew up a bit. "Hey, have you ever been to Florida?"
"Never, sadly. Why?"
"I soooo want to go!"
"Me too, it seems so fun!" I say as we turn off a road and into a road in the woods.
"We should go this summer, when we graduate!" Ellie yells.
"Oh my god, yes!" I yell back.
This is what I should be doing as a normal teenager. But I know when I tell Ellie, about my little problem, she won't want to hang out with me.
Ellie pulls off a side road and we are near a large lake.
"I used to come here with my friends all the time," Ellie murmured. "Its a nice place to talk and get to know people." She smiles at me and gets out of the car.
I follow along and we sit on the end of a dock, our feet suspended over the water. We didn't say anything. There was just silence.
"Can I tell you something?" I asked and Ellie nodded and I continued. "I'm pregnant. I don't know what to do." I sighed.
"It will get better, I promise." She smiled at me.
More silence.
"My friends died in a car crash last summer." Ellie said suddenly.
"Oh my god, Ellie, I'm so sorry." I gave her a little side hug.
"I was driving them home after a party. I had been the designated driver. So they were all drunk." Ellie shook her head and I spotted a single tear fall out of her eye. "I didn't see the truck, it was coming before I knew what to do..." she sobs and hits her fist on the dock. "I killed them."
"Ellie, wherever they are, they don't blame you for that. Never." I hug her and she sobs into my shoulder.
"I haven't even told Sam about that." She said, trying to smile. "I think this makes us best friends."
"I could really need some best friends," I chuckle and we hug again.
I try to stand up but end up falling back down.
"Im so clumsy," I say to myself and laugh. Ellie grabs my hand and helps me up. We walk back to her car and get in.
Ellie drives me back to my house, then goes next door to Sammy's house to say goodbye to him.
I get into bed and lay down.
I lay asleep for a couple hours, and then I wake up at two A.M. My mom and Sammy at huddled around me. Sammy is stroking my hair while my mom is on the phone.
"Hey, Sammi." Sammy says when he sees my eyes open."What happened?" I ask. My head is pounding and my stomach feels as if its ready to explode.
"We don't know yet," Sammy sighs and shakes his head. "Your mom woke up and heard you screaming, and she came in here and you were complaining that your stomach and head hurt. She got me in here and now she's calling 911."
"No, I'm fine." I manage to get out as i gasp for breath.
"Stay calm, Sammi. We're getting you help."
I can barely see anymore. Sammy's messy hair comes in and out of view.
"I-I'm okay," I gasp.
The ambulance. Bright lights. My mom's stricken face passing by me. Sammy practically pulling out his hair. Nate yelling.
And those couple words that will soon tear my life apart.
"The baby is gone."
