Where the hell are we going to get this money from? Steven’s in debt from having to pay all the bills on his own. If we just show up with Susanne he’s not going to give a shit about her, she’s got no money. It’s the money he wants and if the money is what’s going to get Ryan back then the money is what he’s going to get! But we need to find some very fast because god knows what he’s going to do with Ryan. I suppose I could take a loan out from the bank? If it means getting Ryan back well then I’ll do whatever it takes.
“Well we’re going to take no shit from this Robert guy. We need a plan Charlotte, and a damn good plan to outsmart him!” He said with power in his voice.
“Got any ideas then?” I said unsure of what was to come, if Steven is anything like Ryan then this plan is going to be mad.
“Where’s the phone?”
“Here!” I said reaching into the back pocket of my jeans, pulling out the old battered Nokia phone and handing it to him.
Steven quickly started typing, dancing his thumbs across the keyboard. He’s quite a fast typer for an old man I thought. As he typed the message I took a glance around the room and realised how empty and dull it really was. Its dim green walls and few objects that stood companionless around the room. What an awful place to live in I thought. Not welcoming or homely like other houses I’m used to being in. More like an old shed or something you’d use to store objects rather than a home or a place to live in. He handed me back the phone and the words read-
‘Meet at your house at seven o’clock for the money, bring Ryan.’
“But Steven, you don’t have the money nor do I.”
“Well here’s a little secret of mine, I still have some money from my old business hidden away at home in my safe. I didn’t let anyone know about it. I thought I could save up and use it for something important. Ide say it must be about the right amount to cover the expenses.” He said grinning but clearly annoyed that he would have to waste his savings over Susanne. I’m sure he would think of a way to get the money back from Susanne anyway.
So it’s Monday morning and I should be at school but no I’m paying some strange man money for an old lazy, alcohol, drug addict to save my best friend instead. If only my parents knew they’d be on a flight straight back here. It’s strange that all weekend I haven’t been talking to Mollie, Lexi, Dan or James. I would have thought that they would be curious to what was wrong with Ryan on Friday or why we aren’t at school today but not a phone call or text message. Well maybe they just didn’t realise or think is just a coincidence that we’re both off, maybe sick? I thought.
‘Beep, Beep’ I unlocked my phone and coincidently had a message from Mollie.
‘Hey Char, where are you? Its break time now and Ryan isn’t in either. Are you’s two alright? X’
Shit I’ll have to think of some stupid lie to tell Mollie. I hate lying to my friends but I’m sure if Ryan wanted them to know he’ll tell them himself when he gets back, if he does. No, when he does! We’ll get him back if it’s the last thing we do.
‘Hey Mollie I’m fine just sick and got a bad cold. Ryan’s got a bit of a bug, I’ll probably be back to school tomorrow x Char x’
We got into the car and drove back to Steven’s house as fast as he could without breaking the speed limit. The drive was silent the whole way home but it wasn’t one of those awkward silences. Just a comfortable silence where we knew we were letting each other sort out our thoughts. It was one of those crazy moments when too much is going on and you need to take the time to think of each thing individually to sort things out.
When we pulled up the driveway to his house he immediately stopped the car and hopped out to get the money from the safe. No more than two minutes later he came jogging back out of the house with a fat, brown envelope. He jumped back into the car and before starting it again he turned around to me.
“You’re a really good friend to Ryan, I’m honoured that he has such a good friend like you,” he said softly.
I blushed a little and replied,
“Hey, what friend wouldn’t save another from a whacky pair,” earning a simultaneous loud laugh from both of us.

We finally got back to the house just as the sun was lowering in the sky after stopping of in the town before to get food, you know me always looking for food. Even though I could barely down the food with the thoughts and hope that Ryan would be okay. Anyways it was exactly as I remembered it. Dull and still had that smoke smell hanging around in the air almost as if it smelt worse this time. We got to the end of the street where the house was and parked the car just beside the fence surrounding the garden. We slowly got out of the car and reached the front door, I noticed the spider web still hanging in the corner of the door frame, now finding it really hard to keep the food settled in my stomach. This time we decided on just opening the door instead of knocking. It was only half six at the time so we decided we had a lot of time to think of what we were going to say to Robert when he arrives. When I stepped inside the door I could hear the light sound of snoring coming from the back room. What the fuck? Was Robert here already, and sleeping? We slowly crept down to the bedroom. I opened the door slowly and couldn’t help the gasp that escaped my mouth.
“Susanne!”
