“Charlotte! It’s eleven o’clock; get your lazy ass outta bed now!” Mum called from the kitchen.
“I hope you didn’t sleep in like this all the time I was away!”
“Yeah, course not.” I mumbled pulling the covers over my head, snuggling further into their warmth. A few more minutes please I internally begged not ready to open my eyes to the light.
Next thing the warmth covering me disappeared as the cold air attacked me.
“Get out of bed now Charlotte!”
“No, I’m still sleeping.” I grumbled.
“You have to get ready for dinner later and don’t forget to bring your boyfriend over!” Mum giggled like an intoxicated teenager from one of those cliché American chick flicks.
“I won’t!” I wouldn’t be able to forget with you reminding me every few minutes.
“Now get up and get ready for dinner!”
“No!” I sighed loudly exaggerated on the ‘o’. But then I eventually gave up against the cold air that was freezing off my legs. Should have worn a onesie I mentally face-palmed myself.
“Oh and wear something nice, we’re dressing up!” Mum called from the kitchen again.
“No!” Not the effort!
I dragged myself to the bathroom to take a quick shower and then brushed my teeth. I looked through my closet at the endless hangers supporting clothes that didn’t suit the occasion. A football jersey, another football jersey, shorts, shorts, shorts, a t-shirt, another t-shirt, leggings, jeans and more jeans. I finally stopped at the end of the wardrobe; the last hanger supporting the red dress my auntie got me two years ago. Boy did I not fit into it. I guess I can only hope for the best now then.
I took the hanger out from the back of the closet and made my way back to the bathroom with my towel still securely wrapped around me. I slipped the red dress down over my head and let it flow down to my knees. The silver ribbon felt comfortable around my waist and the dress no longer looked or felt as tight and small as it did two years ago. I guess them trips to the gym and my sit-ups really paid off after all. I put on my little red sandals then got out the hair dryer and curlers. Once my hair was finished and the curls were flowing down around my shoulders in cute ringlets I got out my make-up bag. I applied the smallest amount of makeup possible then made my way down to the kitchen to see how dinner was going.
Mum had the table laid out with a fancy silver table cloth lying over it and the cutlery that she got from her mum on her wedding day. She really was making the effort; I guess it is a pretty special occasion.
She had an apron on over her dinner clothes which consisted of a long black pencil shirt and a white blouse. Dad had on a light blue shirt and the stripy tie I got him for his birthday one year and little Katie was wearing one of her cute little dresses with a matching cardigan and sandals.
“Dinner should be ready in about an hour Char. You can call your boyfriend to come over now. By the way I never quite caught his name, what was it again?” Mum asked whilst stirring her homemade vegetable soup.
“Ryan, his names Ryan.” I smiled.
“Ryan. What a lovely name.” Mum replied.
I grabbed my phone from countertop in the kitchen and texted Ryan.
‘Hey, you can come over any time now, hope your wearing something nice, a red tie would defo work;) See you later x’
‘I’ll be there in 10mins just gotta get something ;) Love you x’
