I packed a bag and headed over to Moms. Driving in all this snow calms me but for some reason I love it.
Mom's not doing well in the big house by herself so I'm going to go stay a while and help her get dad's finances in order.
My dad only passed less than a month ago and here it is Christmas time and I don't want this to ruin my favorite time of the year.
I get out of my Range Rover and head inside the house. When I opened the door it smelled so good.
"Mom where are you?"
"In the kitchen Reyah!"
"What are you cooking?"
"Oh, Reyah you know me I'm trying a new recipe for my catering business."
"Well it smells good so what is it?"
"It's sweet potato casserole in a muffin form." She smiled.
"Are we still doing the catering job this weekend?"
"Of course are you going to be able to help?"
"Of course I will help you mom. I also brought my luggage so I can stay awhile."
"Oh, Reyah that makes my heart happy."
"I guess I get my old bedroom back but while I'm here I want to try and figure out dad's finances."
"That's a whole monster of its own but be my guest. You know your dad's office is a mess."
"Yeah this I know but I guess I will go in there and look around. Sometime next week I need to go to the bank too."
"Don't forget the animal shelter! Just because Russ is gone doesn't mean we won't carry on tradition Reyah."
"I can write a check and take it down there but do you really want me to volunteer as he did?"
"Of course I do Reyah and that's how your dad would have wanted it."
"Alright, mom I get it. Well, holler when those muffins are done because I want to try one." I smiled.
"You got it Reyah." She smiled turning back to the stove.
I walked down the hall and when I flipped on the light to Dad's office a flood of memories came back to me.
When I was a little girl dad would be in here working on stuff and would take time to talk to me and see how I was feeling.
I walked over to his desk and sit down and stared at a picture he has of me and mom on his desk.
I smile thinking back to last Christmas when dad surprised me with my Range Rover. He claimed he picked white because it matches the snow that I love so much.
He spoiled me so much and I knew it. I help mom with her catering company and have since high school and never had a real job of my own.
I don't feel better than anyone else it's just my dad was a banker and knew how to manage money or so I thought.
I started going through his desk and found several check ledgers and my head is spinning.
It's hard to figure all of this out but I guess I'm just going to have to go down to the bank and get help.
I closed his desk drawer and walked upstairs to my bedroom. It's weird being back in this room after moving out seven years ago.
My phone buzzes.
📱 Hey you up for drinks tonight?
📱 Hey Brynn! Can I get back to you? I am staying with mom now and I'm not sure I can get away.
📱 Sure just let me know. We will be at the martini bar around 8 if you can join.
📱 Thanks for the invite!
I put my phone in my pocket and walk back down to the kitchen just as mom was taking the muffins out of the oven.
"Oooh just in time! I can't wait to eat one hot."
"Reyah you are going to burn your mouth!"
"Mom I know but I want it anyway." I laughed biting into the muffin.
"Well, what do you think?"
"Oh, mom I love it. You most definitely have to make them at upcoming catering jobs."
"I will have to add it to the menu." She smiled.
We sit and talked and eat our muffins and then mom said after she cleaned up the kitchen she was going to call it an early night.
"Brynn and Joey invited me out to the martini bar downtown so I think I will go for a little while."
"Just be careful and lock me in. I love you Reyah."
"I love you to mom," I said heading upstairs to shower and put something else on.
After putting on some lipgloss I looked at myself in the mirror again.
I had on my favorite pair of jeans with holes in them with a red top that's off the shoulder on one side with some red high heels.
I walked to Mom's room and looked in and she was asleep so I tiptoed downstairs and locked her in and headed out to my Range Rover.
I can't help but smile when I see it because it's the last gift that dad ever bought me.
I really need to grow up and get my life together.
I drive downtown and finally find a parking space because this place is booked.
I walk in and walk over to the bar and see Brynn and Joey laughing with each other.
"Hey, love birds!"
"Hey, Reyah! We are so glad that you made it!"
"Thanks! I wasn't sure if I was coming or not but mom went to sleep early."
"How is she doing?"
"Better! She was actually cooking this evening and made these amazing sweet potato casserole muffins."
"Oh, that sounds to die for." Brynn smiled.
"I told her she needs to put them on her catering list."
"I would like to try one of those." Joey smiled.
"Come over in the morning and I'm sure there will be some left."
"You have a deal we will be there bright and early." Brynn laughed.
I smiled over at the both of them taking a sip of my martini.
